ST. PAUL, Minn. - A St. Paul officer who shot and wounded a Black man who emerged naked from a dumpster while being sought in connection with a sexual assault failed to measure up to department standards, the city’s police chief said.
Chief Todd Axtell said Tuesday at a news conference where he released police bodycam video of the confrontation that he’d taken “swift, decisive and serious action” against the officer, identified by state investigators as Officer Anthony Dean.
Axtell said state law precludes him from releasing details of the action. The Minneapolis Star Tribune and St. Paul Pioneer Press, citing law enforcement sources they did not identify, reported that the officer was fired following Saturday night’s shooting of Joseph Javonte Washington.
“When I asked myself if the officer’s actions on Saturday night were reasonable and necessary,” Axtell said, “the only answer I could come up with is “No.”
St. Paul Police Federation President Paul Kuntz defended the officers involved, saying they were trying to apprehend “a violent and dangerous felon.”
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, which is investigating the shooting, said Dean shot Washington, who had no weapons or other possessions when he emerged from the dumpster behind a funeral home. Washington, 31, of Lakeville, is recovering at Regions Hospital.
In the body camera footage, a female officer attempts to coax Washington out of the dumpster and onto the ground. He gets out and an officer shouts “Don’t run!” before shots are fired. Washington is bitten by a police K-9 and then screams for the dog to get off him.
It wasn’t known whether Washington had a lawyer who could comment on his behalf.

IF, big if, the facts are as reported then I agree the male officer should not have fired at the naked man running. He posed no threat and it sounds like the female officer was handling it

Too cold. Hard to carry a television when its only 20 degrees outside. Summer is riot season.
One of them drew a piece and stopped a violent felon from escaping to harm others. They did it after he refused easier choices. He ended up wounded and recovering instead of dead. I’m not one of those people who gives cops carte blanche, but I’m not seeing what anyone has to complain about here.
It’s cold up in Minnesota now. I doubt there would be much rioting, unless a building or two were lit up to keep everybody warm.

Shoot or not, your rights to a fair hearing should be honored.
Place on administrative duties pending results of the incident is normal and fair practice.

According to a story from the Associated Press, the Associated Press Stylebook mandates Black man should be capitalized, and white man should not.

This is too bizarre to tell with a straight face.
The spokesman at the mic in the picture reminds me of a scene from “Porky’s”, where Beulah Ballbricker is trying to explain an incident in the girls’ locker room. The school principal couldn’t contain himself any longer when she described and said she could identify a boy’s “talleywhacker”.
The spokesman looks like he’s looking down so as not to betray the amused look on his face. The masked men have no such problem.

Good to know, from now on, I will do the opposite.
I think the rioters would put on their long johns and destroy the city again if Trump succeeds in weeding out all the voter fraud and ends up with a second term.
