Britain will become Europe's greatest naval power again after a £16.5billion boost to defence spending, Boris Johnson vowed yesterday.
The Prime Minister said he would 'restore Britain's position' as the ruler of the waves rather than allow the UK to 'curl up in our island and leave the task to our friends'.
Billions of pounds of the extra defence cash would go towards the next generation of warships, including advanced new Type 32 frigates which will be armed with lasers.

So the Brits will go from 60 ships to 61?
Like many governments, the devil is in the details. A lot of what is included in this has already been announced or planned.
The actual new additional amount is considerably less.
£16 billion over four years is the equivilent of 64 new Type 31 frigates (at £250 million each). There should be plenty of money to build up a decent sized fleet to make a full carrier strike force in addition to the new cyber and space capabilities.
The ambition to become the second-largest defence spender in NATO is a way of building up diplomatic clout after Brexit.
Manned by muslim invaders I assume
Muslims tend not to join HM Forces. There are like 500 of them in the entire army out of nearly 100,000.
In other news, the Redskins are going to be relegated to London, but continue to play in the NFC East, where they are expect to be contenders. The new mascot is “the Nessy Swamp Dwellers” and the logo pictures Biden crawling out of a basement window.
Without the UK the Eurozone is a joke when it comes to power projection. I am happy to see the UK reengaging in global politics which required power projection.
I highly commend the book “To Rule The Waves” which traces the rise and decline of the RN. Notable is that as the RN retreated so did the UK's influence in world affairs. A lesson that should be noted in looking at how we have allowed the USN to decline.
I don’t think the EU wants to spend the money on power projection, as it is rarely used and the whole creation of the EU was to end their cyclical wars between them (and that part has worked).
The EU countries tend to keep small professional armies, which are only used overseas when there is a VERY clear justification (evacuating their citizens from Rwanda, for example). The public in those countries would never allow their governments to waste lives on futile nation-building to the extent we do.
They’re building diesel powered aircraft carriers. Please!
Frikin’ lasers! Yeah baby!
If Dan Snyder had any guts or respect for his predecessor (who won 3 Super Bowls) , he would name the team The RalJon RalJons. The stadium is located at Raljon,MD before they took that name away too. Not only would Jack Kent Cooke like that, his sons Ralph and Jon would like it too.
“ So the Brits will go from 60 ships to 61?”
************
I “think” I’ve read that they’re considering mothballing their two jump carriers. Apparently, they don’t have sufficient ships to provide an adequate protective shield.
Will their ships have minarets?
Good. There’s a lot Boris has done that I’m not fond of but increasing the defence (notice the British spelling) budget and getting out of the EU are good things.
Gas turbine MT30 Rolls Royce, not diesel. They are the most powerful conventional marine engines on the market.
They arent. Cameron considered it 10 years ago when he was forced by contractual clauses to keep building the aircraft carriers instead of scrapping them.
“They’re building diesel powered aircraft carriers. Please!”
They can “Roll Coal” on enemy submarines!
Jet fuel is highly refined kerosene #1 fuel oil. Diesel #2 fuel oil.
Same, same. (Oooh Rolls Royce....wow!)
