A Western New York postal worker has been accused of stealing more than 800 pieces of mail, including three absentee ballots. Brandon Wilson, who works at a post office in West Seneca, is facing federal charges after prosecutors say he stole mail from his delivery routes and put them in his trunk starting in September of this year. Investigators believe he was stealing greeting card cash and checks meant for homes along his delivery route in parts of Buffalo. However, when they sorted the 813 pieces of mail Wilson allegedly stole, investigators found three absentee ballots that were supposed to be delivered to voters in Erie County. Wilson was stopped by United States Customs and Border Patrol agents on Election Day at the Peace Bridge connecting Buffalo to Canada. Wilson said the mail belonged to him and his mother, but according to court paperwork, "could not account for additional names printed on the mail pieces Wilson then said he had planned to return the mail to the post office, but forgot the mail was in his trunk. He is charged with the delay or destruction of mail, a federal offense.

Video at link. When I worked for the USPS political mailings and absentee ballots were carefully watched by the postal inspectors. They were known to not only watch us from the catwalks above the work floor, they would also follow the mail contractors and carriers around. I’ve seen people end up getting fitted with the silver bracelets and escorted out for messing with political mailings.
