A man opened fire Friday on a prankster who fired paintballs at him after mistaking the paintball gun for a real gun, according to police in Michigan City.
Authorities said the 40-year-old man was pumping gas at a BP gas station when he began to hear popping sounds and felt stings on his body.
The (man) then saw someone out of the passenger side widow of a passing vehicle with what appeared to be a gun, police said. The (man), thinking that he was being shot at by the passenger in this vehicle, drew his concealed firearm and fired several shots at the vehicle.
Officers responded to the gas station and determined that the man had been hit by several paintballs. He was not injured. Police said the man has a valid handgun license and fully cooperated with authorities.
Investigators learned a similar incident had been reported earlier Friday in which people were struck with paintballs a few blocks away from the gas station. No injuries were reported in that incident either, authorities said.
We would like to send a message to the community that this type of behavior can be extremely dangerous, police said Tuesday. Not only could an event like on Friday occur which could lead to someone getting seriously hurt or killed, but indiscriminately shooting paintballs at people and vehicles can lead to serious injuries and property damage.

Doubtful the dumbass perps will do it again... but then again they are dumbasses.
One place I dont stop for gas. Michigan City/East Chicago.
The man needs to continue his firearm practice so that next time he doesn’t miss.
The two reasons for not indiscriminately firing paintballs should have been given in reversed order to indicated the most serious reason at the end.

Guess the pb shooter won that round.
“...indiscriminately shooting paintballs at people and vehicles can lead to serious injuries and property damage.
Stating the obvious, thank you. It’s one of those assumed risk situations.
Damn right.
Misread the title...thought it said “Man shouts at pranksters...”
I need new glasses.
Someone needs more time at the range.
Were the miscreants charged with assault?.....................
In nature the penalty for stupidity is death; the sentence is executed immediately, and there is no appeal.

When he returned fire I bet their underwear changed color
I hope he at least hit their car.
The old saying “play stupid games, win stupid prizes” comes to mind on this one.
Idiots got what they deserve
A paintball gun is a real gun. I say the victim was justified even if somehow he knew it was a paint gun since being attacked with any object may well lead to a further more deadly attack.
A paint ball to the face could blind the victim and allow him to more easily assaulted.
When I brought my pre-teen children to firearms awareness they signed a document for me stating among other things that they would never again “play” with guns - paintball, cap, nerf, or otherwise. Our firearms are real. There are no “toy” guns in our house. With a Red Ryder or a Ruger 10/22 though my kids can knock an acorn off a tree.
