U.S.A. –-(AmmoLand.com)-When researching incidents of firearms used to defend against bears, the surprising deadly potential of the common .22 rimfire cartridge becomes apparent. The most famous incident involving the .22 rimfire cartridge and bears is the 1953 world record grizzly bear.
It was collected by Bella Twin of Slave Lake in Alberta Canada. From my article at ammoland.com:
On 10 May, 1953, Bella Twin was hunting small game with her partner, Dave Auger, along an oil exploration cutline south of Slave Lake, in Alberta, Canada. She was 63 years old.
They saw a large grizzly bear coming toward them. Wishing to avoid an encounter, they hid off the side of the cut.
But the bear kept coming closer and closer. The bear got so close that Bella Twin thought it less risky to shoot the bear than to not shoot it. It was probably only a few yards away. Some accounts say 30 feet. Perhaps she saw it stop and start to sniff, as if it had caught their scent. We may never know.
She shot at the side of the bears head. Knowing animal anatomy very well (she was an experienced trapper, and had skinned hundreds, perhaps thousands of animals) she knew exactly where to aim to penetrate the skull at its weakest point.

If a giant grizzly in a bad mood should happen to come my way, I would want something very large bore with a magnum powder load.
I finally scored a Ruger 10.22. I’m not crazy about the way I did (my father left it to me), but it’s quite a gun. He never fired it, but he did collect 3,500 rounds that I can use for “practice”. It came with a scope, but I’m not sure a scope is necessary for a .22.
If the truth were told, the 22 rd has killed more deer than any other round; legal and not legal kills.
I’d always planned to shoot at the eyes, should that situation ever happen to me.
I could picture a dinky .22 rimfire just pissing off the bear, if you didn’t hit it just right. Given my druthers, I’d be in a different state entirely, even with my 12 gauge magnum load.
Yeah. Getting a shot at the side is not likely. Getting more than one is even more not likely. Talk about risk!
I’ve got a bone stock 10-22 with a Nikon scope on it. It’s wicked accurate out to 100 yards or so.

I’ve only put ten rounds or so through this gun and it didn’t seem all that accurate, but I’m almost certain it’s me. I need to do a solid scope adjustment on sandbags. Then I can focus on the main source of the problem - me.
The trigger is really stiff, BTW, Probably needs lubrication. It came with a bunch of large magazines, but the magazine that came with the gun was loaded and the cartridges were corroded like a bunch of dead AAA batteries. It took a lot of WD40 and prying to get them all out. Fortunately, it wasn’t in the gun.
Slugs are a great round. But large animals such a large the large bears have thick hair and skin which slugs have trouble penetrating to reach vital organs for a kill but would tend to seriously discourage them.

I always just carry a six pack of Bear Wiz beer. When I happen on a Grizzly, we pop a few caps and discuss our entwined futures. When he gets drunk and passes out, I slip away...
