Most likely voters who identify as Roman Catholic support Democratic nominee Joe Biden, despite the Democrat’s positions on abortion and religious freedom. At just over one-fifth of the population, Catholics form a pivotal voting bloc. An important new poll from EWTN and RealClearPolitics shows Trump at an immense disadvantage, but it also highlights three issues where the president can make up some ground on his opponent in this crucial voting bloc.

First, the bad news: Self-identified Catholics prefer Biden (52 percent) to Trump (40 percent) nationwide. Fifty-nine percent of Catholics say they prefer Biden’s temperament to that of Trump, while only 33 percent prefer Trump’s temperament. More than half (53 percent) say they agree with Biden’s policies, while only 41 percent said they agree with Trump’s. More Catholics also disapprove (53 percent) than approve (47 percent) of Trump’s performance as president.

Worse, more of the Catholics in the EWTN/RCP sample said they voted for Trump (48 percent) than for Hillary Clinton (46 percent) in the 2016 presidential election.

Catholics form a somewhat representative sample of the American population as a whole. The EWTN/RCP sample included 1,490 Catholics, 60 percent white, about a third Hispanic or Latino, and three percent black. The poll revealed major political gaps along the lines of race, age, and religious observance. White Catholics, older Catholics, and more observant Catholics favored Trump more.

The poll also highlighted three issues where Trump can make up some ground in the race against Biden.

1. Abortion

While the Roman Catholic Church officially condemns abortion, self-identified Catholics have a broad range of opinions on the issue.

And don't forget how the Obama/Biden war against the Little Sisters of the Poor! Years of legal battles against the ObamaCare mandate for contraception AND the abusive lawsuit by PA AG Josh Shapiro.

“Pennsylvania Attorney General, Josh Shapiro is suing to make the Little Sisters of the Poor pay for abortion drugs in violation of their Catholic faith."

I think you nailed it right there.

Most RAT-voting Catholics are Catholics in name only.

I would expect that devout Catholics break toward the right.

3 Ways Trump Can Win the Catholic Vote in 2020:
1) Praise the Communist occupying the Vatican.

2) Celebrate abortionA woman's right to choose.

3) Embrace pedophilia.

The hierarchy acts, at best, as if the left and the right are morally equivalent. A statement attributed to Cardinal O’Malley, I can’t substantiate it but it sounds like something he would say — “Why are democrats so wrong on abortion when they’re so right on everything else!” He has preached gun control from the pulpit. At worst, the hierarchy openly supports the left.

They’re so afraid of turning people off with actual Catholic teachings and losing the $$$ those Jack-Catholics put in the basket.

It’s funny how even otherwise intelligent people can be so stupid about matters theological.

It’s probably because they turned away from it before their brains were fully formed, and their adolescent hostility keeps them from ever considering it as an adult.

Penn Jillette, for instance, can talk intelligently on many subjects, but when he turns to religion, he morphs into a slobbering moron.

They could repent before death.
There you have it in a nutshell.

People claiming sinners will be sorry when they have to answer to god, will tell you out of the other side of their mouth, all you have to do is repent, confess and you'll be saved

It's a ceremony performed before every execution.

IOW, in the end, you never have to be accountable for your evil deeds.

how many “liberal Catholics” have repented for voting for Beelzebubba?
You may have lost sight of who the real sinner is in your question?

There are an unlimited number of ways to break down the electorate for purposes of understanding an election. But I think looking at “self-identified Catholics” as a group is nearly worthless. First, there is an ethnic divide: a majority of White (non-Hispanic) Catholics do vote Republican. That is a tend that is increasing each election. Second, many or perhaps most people who think of themselves as Catholics make little or no effort to practice or even understand their supposed religion. For such people, “Catholic” is just a team affiliation that they maintain for some kind of nostalgia or ethnic / family identity purposes. And of course even those Catholics who do listen to their priests and bishops receive mostly weak or wrong guidance. Articles like this are lazy and uninformative. (And as for you Massachusetts Catholics who have spent decades voting for Kennedys, well you are an embarrassment and have no excuse.)

Just got an e-blast from the Bishop of South Carolina. While not mentioning anyone by name, he strongly posited abortion as the #1 issue in the upcoming election, urging the faithful to bear in mind the candidates’ positions on this heinous crime against humanity.

“Second, many or perhaps most people who think of themselves as Catholics make little or no effort to practice or even understand their supposed religion.”

But it’s so hard. (whine)

I mean, there’s two thousand years worth of the intellectual work product of the deepest and holiest people ever to live. Have you *seen* a complete edition of Summa Theologica sitting on the shelf?

Sent me right back to my little paperback of “An Introduction To The Devout Life” by St. Francis De Sales. The sisters gave it to my oldest daughter when she finished 8th grade.

Sort of makes my point.

Are there different levels, sections, or entrances to heaven for each belief/religion?

Thanks

Paul Harvey - if I Were the Devil - a Warning for America (1965) - It’s All Come True

If I were the devil …

If I were the Prince of Darkness, I’d want to engulf the whole world in darkness. And I’d have a third of its real estate, and four-fifths of its population, but I wouldn’t be happy until I had seized the ripest apple on the tree—Thee. So I’d set about however necessary to take over the United States. I’d subvert the churches first—I’d begin with a campaign of whispers. With the wisdom of a serpent, I would whisper to you as I whispered to Eve: ‘Do as you please.’

“To the young, I would whisper that ‘The Bible is a myth.’ I would convince them that man created God instead of the other way around. I would confide that what’s bad is good, and what’s good is ‘square.’ And the old, I would teach to pray, after me, ‘Our Father, which art in Washington…’

“And then I’d get organized. I’d educate authors in how to make lurid literature exciting, so that anything else would appear dull and uninteresting. I’d threaten TV with dirtier movies and vice versa. I’d pedal narcotics to whom I could. I’d sell alcohol to ladies and gentlemen of distinction. I’d tranquilize the rest with pills.

“If I were the devil I’d soon have families that war with themselves, churches at war with themselves, and nations at war with themselves; until each in its turn was consumed. And with promises of higher ratings I’d have mesmerizing media fanning the flames. If I were the devil I would encourage schools to refine young intellects, but neglect to discipline emotions—just let those run wild, until before you knew it, you’d have to have drug sniffing dogs and metal detectors at every schoolhouse door.

“Within a decade I’d have prisons overflowing, I’d have judges promoting pornography—soon I could evict God from the courthouse, then from the schoolhouse, and then from the houses of Congress. And in His own churches I would substitute psychology for religion, and deify science. I would lure priests and pastors into misusing boys and girls, and church money. If I were the devil I’d make the symbol of Easter an egg and the symbol of Christmas a bottle.

“If I were the devil I’d take from those who have, and give to those who want until I had killed the incentive of the ambitious.

And what do you bet I could get whole states to promote gambling as the way to get rich? I would caution against extremes and hard work in Patriotism, in moral conduct. I would convince the young that marriage is old-fashioned, that swinging is more fun, that what you see on the TV is the way to be. And thus, I could undress you in public, and I could lure you into bed with diseases for which there is no cure. In other words, if I were the devil I’d just keep right on doing what he’s doing.

“Paul Harvey, good day.”

Race, area/location and urban/rural divide are much better indicators of voting choice. Catholics in one state might vote 70% dem and in another 70% pub. I think I recall that happening with Louisiana and New Mexico.
