Migrant apprehensions up along border; CBP boss warns of impending wave of COVID-19 refugees

Unauthorized immigration is creeping up along the southwest border despite emergency measures to prevent the illegal entry of people, especially amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The number of migrant apprehensions in September rose by more than 7,000 compared to August, which itself saw an increase of almost 9,100 arrests from the previous month. The Border Patrol and CBP detained a total of 57,674 unauthorized and inadmissible migrants this past September...

U.S. Customs and Border Protection Acting Commissioner Mark Morgan said those attempting to come into the country illegally are mostly single adult economic migrants from Mexico and other countries who’re disregarding the dangers of catching and spreading the coronavirus along the way...

The recent increases run counter to a trend dating back to June 2019, when the Trump administration strong-armed Mexico into preventing migrant caravans originating in Central America from reaching the U.S. Border...

That, and CBP’s controversial “Remain in Mexico” policy were widely credited with bringing down apprehensions from a high of 144,116 in May of last year to just over 41,000 by October 2019...

In some parts of the border, recidivism rates are up 50%, meaning those who are deported within a few hours after entry under the emergency Title 42 CDC order are making a second, third or fourth run at the border shortly after...

Morgan said the coronavirus will play an even greater role in illegal immigration in coming months... As in the United States, many businesses have closed and employees have been laid off during the pandemic. Unlike the United States, few have received stimulus checks from their governments.

“I’m telling you right now, as economic conditions worsen in Mexico and the entire Western Hemisphere due to COVID, get ready. We’re already seeing the numbers increase,” Morgan said.

After crashing to a monthly low in April, apprehensions at the border have been increasing, and now are above the longer term average.

However, this may not really mean more people than average getting in - some significant percentage is from the same people being apprehended and quickly deported, several times in a row.

Those trying to get in now, are more like the long term norm of single Mexican men looking for work, rather than the large number of Central Americans and family units that overwhelmed our detention capacity last year.

The CBP Commissioner warns that we face a coming flood of such economic migrants, as Latin American economies crash due to COVID lockdowns, without the kind of stimulus relief from the Government, that we have had in the USA.

The red line below is for this year (2020).

They’ll run into The Wall, hopefully.

yet there are those who say we don’t need a wall, just some drones, and cameras. I’m hoping that by the end of next summer the border will be pretty much sealed with wall and triple-layer fencing.

Looks like they're giving ICE the old cold shoulder, lol. I'd love to see look on their faces if they looked out the window and saw ICE and the crew bailing out... Might deter others, too.

“I’m hoping that by the end of next summer the border will be pretty much sealed”

A lot will be done, that will significantly disrupt illegal immigration and smuggling, but it won’t be sealed.

It depends heavily on what happens in this election. If Biden is elected, progress will stop pretty sharply (and the doors thrown open). If Republicans sweep, there could be a quick plus up.

The big border cities out West - San Diego, Yuma, El Paso, even Tucson - will be dramatically walled off from how they were before. To a significant degree, they already are.

Out West, they are already starting to chew into some of the tough mountainous terrain, because the cities and the flats are so well underway.

Texas has lagged behind due to land acquisition challenges, but work in the Rio Grande Valley is now underway, and Laredo is on contract to start soon.

A lot of new technology is flooding the zone as well, ad making an increasing impact.

But those Illegals are all wearing masks and are slathered in disinfectant, right?

Right?!
