Mask use does not lead to a higher risk of COVID-19 as viral social media posts claim
Health Feedback ^ | 14 Oct 2020 | Flora Teoh

CLAIM More people who wear masks become sick with COVID-19 compared to non-mask wearers, therefore masks don’t work or are making us ill

SOURCE: Jordan Davidson, The Federalist, 12 Oct. 2020

DETAILS Flawed reasoning: The comparison made in the claim is not related to mask effectiveness, but is simply the result of the fact that the study included many more people who wear masks as compared to people who never wore masks to begin with. Of all 314 individuals in the study, there were only 11 who never wore masks. By default, a comparison of the proportions of people who wore masks and those who never wore masks would show mask wearers to be the majority.

Misleading: An underlying assumption of the claim is that masks are mainly intended to protect the wearer from infection. However, health authorities advise the public to use masks with the aim of reducing the spread of infection to other people in case one is infected. Face masks are not intended to protect the wearer from infection.

This is Facebook's fact check. They start with the BS premise: "Mask use does not lead to a higher risk" Can agree that mask use does not lead to higher risk, however, with 85% of the people getting covid masks are near useless.

Facebook is doing the misleading.

It likely leads to a higher risk of bacterial and fungal infections as few people keep those masks clean.

I posted this article on FB and they blocked it and I sent them a “nice” reply. I’ve been trying everything to get kicked off FB but can’t!

The mask doesn’t cause wearers to get CoVid more often. It’s just not very effective in preventing infection from CoVid.

In other words, it’s a tool for compliance to arbitrary rules. Highly effective in that regard. Preventing the spread of a tiny little virus? Not so much.

There is also evidence that leads to higher rates of pink eye because of the the bacteria in your breath being blown up in your eyes all day long.

It also leads to bad breath & oral hygiene issues including tooth and gum issues for those who wear them all day long because people mouth breathes a lot more in order to get sufficient air.

Face diapers for virtue signaling members of the death cult.

Huh? Ohhhhh, really? Whatever happened to the "if you are sick or have any symptoms, stay home" deal? So instead you fit a mask and you are good to go? What a mess, another Science (D) policy salad.

Once re-elected Trump really needs to declare war on this mask nonsense. Unfortunately he needs to Schmooze the Karens in order to get to that point.

Nor do masks prevent the spread of covid.

It doesn’t mean masks give you covid... it just means that more people in the study that got covid wore masks!

They’d make the tobacco companies proud.

So I went to the doc on Friday and was told that my mask was no longer compliant.

U of Utah medical system has now said the mask I’ve been ordered to wear for the last 6 months is no good and doesn’t help prevent the spread of C19.

Why are people still scared of COVID? When Trump and all those old white senators got COVID I said 'they'll all be fine' and ... surprise! ... they all are. Same with breathless headlines like 'NFL team has 18 positive COVID tests in one day!'. And two weeks later, they are all fine.

How many time do we need to see high profile people in the public eye get a positive test and have NO issues whatsoever before people stop being so damned scared of this nonthing-much of a virus (assuming you aren't dealing with COPD or are 85, which it turns out makes the flu damned scary too but for everyone else it's nothing to get worked up over).

The day the mask nonsense broke I knew the truth, and was flummoxed at the rapid rise of the mask narrative.

My working hypothesis at the time - and still - is that while masks may genuinely reduce transmission by the ill, the net result would be a zero sum game, leading to infections by the masked.

The logical rationale is indisputable: Masks present a false sense of security and humans are predisposed to spread germs by behavior (cannot avoid touching face and, as much as most people won’t like to admit it, many people have abominable hygiene habits). This represents both the best & worst of human behavior, the end result being survival of the species via prolific spread of germs & viruses.

I also predicted that the truth on masks would never gain traction; I hope that I am wrong in that respect.

Regrettably, the true health victims in this respect are the infirm/elderly/at-risk who honestly believe that their mask - or, for that matter, others’ - protects them...to their potential peril (as repeatedly demonstrated).

Provided that our Constitution and culture survive, the only thing that this country’s epidemic has produced - aside from a new generation of compliant - is having set the stage for a later - and MUCH more deadly - epidemic, solely as a result of government policy.

I may not live to see it, but if I do, I have mixed emotions about witnessing - as a survivor - a culling to rival the death rate of the Plague...

Questions..the mask is a air filter to catch the virus just like a air filter catches dust...

So were does the virus go that the mask catches go?

A filter does not magically clean its self

If the mask is stopping the virus the virus is in the mask

Just like if a mask is stopping dust particles then the dust particles are in the mask

If it’s cloth you wash it, dry on high heat. my husband has 7 masks, and rotates them, and they all get washed and the filter inserts thrown away. The filters are Filti and have been tested to provide a N95 level of protection.

If you handle a mask you should wash your hands immediately. It needs to be treated as contaminated. There are procedures to don/doff PPE correctly. It’s a shame TPTB don’t educate the public on this as if they are too stupid to get it.

But masks alone aren’t going to protect you, there are other smart measures people can take. My husband’s business has put measures in place and has not had 1 sick employee out of 80 (some are high risk too), even though his business is in a county with almost 80,000 cases. Other businesses (same as his) in the same area have not been as careful as he is and have had sick employees, some of whom have lost loved ones. It wasn’t easy at first but his employees are all on board with the protocols now.

I am an industrial hygienist (since 1992). I sent the air conditioning filters from a high school to our lab after an asbestos fiber release episode (the TEM air sample concentrations collected at the time of the release varied from occluded by fibers to over 1,100 fibers per sq. mm). The clearance for TEM air samples under AHERA is <70 s/mm2. The school refused to shut down the AC sytem until hours later. The lab manager called me, laughing. He said he had received thousands of air conditioner filter samples over the years, and had yet to find a single asbestos fiber (under TEM they are called Structures, so NSD, No Structures Detected). Guess what - my samples were NSD. Opened my eyes. So we expect a cloth or paper mask to stop a 0.1 micron mono-dispersed virus when it won’t stop an asbestos fiber that is thousands of times larger? I have been arguing this since this crap started.

As an engineer, the belief that a mask won’t protect yourself but will protect others is absurd.

If you really believe that, then wear two masks.

Mask wearing is virtue signalling. Mask advocates love to say that wearing a mask shows you care. It also provides the average person the feeling that you are in control, you can do something about the virus.

Politicians love mask mandates because it allows them to show they care too.
FWIW, I’ve been banned from a cruise related social media site for ‘widespread disruptions’ stemming from my comments about masks, social distancing, etc. “Cancel Culture” at it’s finest. If you can refute an argument then ban the person.
