Diabolical... but I first heard of this many years ago in "Help, I Am Being Held Prisoner," by Donald Westlake. Our hero is a prankster but no real criminal. However, he's now (comically) in a criminal gang and must commit a crime to make money.
He comes up with the idea of putting a sign on the bank deposit box "Out of Order - Use Temporary Box Below" with arrow to a box he found and manages to collect a deposit bag.

The only way this scam works is if legitimate likely Republican voters (seniors, white, married, etc) are duped into putting their ballots in these boxes. They will never see a polling place if they do this.

Back in the day, I’d left more than one message in a store demo tape recorder: “Prease help, prease, I am being herd plisoner in a Japanese tape lecorder factory...”
