Energy security and economic fears drive China's return to coal

QINGYANG, China (Reuters) - Red coal trucks zip up and down narrow dirt tracks, churning up clouds of dust in China's remote Gansu province. Nearby, the towering stanchions of a new railway bridge rise out of a muddy river winding through the hills.

The Huaneng Group, one of five big Chinese state utilities, is building a $1.9 billion 4 gigawatt coal and power project in the northwestern region near the city of Qingyang, with the aim of delivering its electricity to the east of the country....

...[China] added 11.4 gigawatts of coal-fired capacity in the first six months of 2020, more than half the amount built worldwide during the period. A study by research group Global Energy Monitor (GEM), also showed that nearly 250 GW of coal-fired plants are under development in China - enough to power Europe's biggest economy, Germany....

Reuters is implying it’s Trump’s fault. They are scared of the bully Orange Man.

That’s garbage. They had planned on building 900 coal-fired power plants in the next decade—long before Trump was elected.

This is left wing media covering for the rank hypocrisy of the Chinese Communist Party.

Expect to see this talking oint repeated throughout the leftwing media.

“Developing country.”

Not to worry. The serfs in CA will make up for it by paying for highly priced “renewable” energy.

China is preparing to have a lot less foreign hard currency for imports, over the next few years.

They have plenty of coal to mine (and slave labor to do it with), but have to pay with real money (not the Monopoly money that they print by the boatload) to import oil or gas.

Wait till California is choking on China's plants when the plume reaches them from that many plants.

Hear that, Newsome? Anything you force Californians to do to “combat climate change” won’t do $hit!

This is an example for Trump to use as a reason to abandon the Paris Accords.

Only the US will be called into account for violations.

China scrambling to get into place something to replace the hydro-electric power they will loose (not if, but) when Three Gorges dam fails. Surprised it’s still there.

Why isn’t China on the cutting edge of Thorium reactors?

‘Cause they would screw that up too!
“Skimming” is a way of life there to a point the old Mob could only envy.

You may remember a few years back, when a Chinese high-pressure project specified U.S. steel tube, but the builders used Chinese steel tube as it was cheaper.
I do not recall exactly how many died as a result, several I believe.

China is also where most new nuclear power plants are being built.

They understand - you can’t have a modern economy without cheap and stable energy.

Makes sense. It’s been said that the dam has bowed and shifted more than a few inches. So they’re going to have to do some major repairs. Not sure how - drain it? Then it will take months to refill to power-producing level. If they do nothing, it will fail for sure.

More to the point, they have to pay with hard currency for the nuclear reactors they had previously wanted to build.

There are no current commercial or military thorium reactor designs known to work at a practical, usable level. Still in the research stage.

They *are* working towards those, though.

Well, we need to get Trump to put some pressure on the development process.

Sandia should re-purpose their Critical Race Theory energy.

China has two experimental thorium reactors going up in the Gobi Desert which were supposed to be completed this year but got COVID’d. I believe they are currently anticipated to be completed late this year or early next.

I’m betting my money on China.

Xi must be giddy watching the US self destruct. All they have to do is wait a decade or two.

A hard nosed, reality based society will always prevail over delusional ones like ours.

We suffer from the disease of affluenza - for too long we’ve had it real good but failed to appreciate what its source was.

Sooner than later, reality will get its revenge.

Three Gorges Dam survived this year’s once in a century heavy monsoon rains/flooding. The annual peak is the last week in July/first week in August, and the end is about now.

Two key points:

1. The type of design (gravity dam) of Three Gorges Dam is inherently safe, unless there is some massive construction defects, and/or some massive overtopping (or running around the sides) from floods greater than the height of the dam, that might massively erode away the soil on the downstream side.

2, The Government there is firmly committed to releasing floodwaters downstream, rather than risking the dam. They sure did it this year, despite massive crop losses, and millions of people displaced.

This year’s flooding was catastrophic, but the dam is not likely to see another test like that for many years. It was getting hairy, but the risk seems to have passed.
