How China has poured billions into the Caribbean by investing in ports, roads and a five-star resort in a soft power grab – as Beijing is blamed for Barbados's calls to drop the Queen as Head of State

China has poured billions of dollars of investment into the Caribbean while signing tax and trade deals in an attempt to wrest the region out of the West's sphere of influence and bring it under the sway of Beijing.

The Chinese government has invested at least $7billion in six Caribbean nations since 2005, records show - building roads, ports and the five-star Baha Mar casino and resort in the Bahamas - though the true figure is thought to run well into the tens of billions.

While some of the money arrives as part of trade and investment deals, much of it is offered as 'soft loans' for infrastructure projects that are harder to track and typically come with requirements to use Chinese contractors for the work. The loans also provide long-term leverage for Beijing over the cash-strapped island nations.

I think they should understand why other Asians and even Ho Chi Minh back then did not trust the Chinese.

Not to downplay the threat/competion with China, but they have A LOT of US$ from their trade surpluses. Chinese companies, both state-run and private, want a return on that money, besides just parking it in low-interest US treasuries.

So much like normal investors, they go out and buy hotels, ports, and any other assets they can to try and get a return.

Chinese companies, both state-run and private,

All companies are owned either by the PLA or controlled by the CCP. There are no private companies in China

Absolutely not true. Yes, any companies over a certain large size will have CCP branches, and the government controls them in many ways - just like our deep state here.

But money is money, and they want to make profitable investments, just like any other people.

And how much CCP money ultimately ends up funding the Democrat Marxists I wonder, as well?

I am not sure if it will go anywhere but China has been talking about a canal between the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean to be built in Nicaragua and financed in part by the Chinese government.

China has been buying up port properties along South America’s coastline for many years, and doing deals for cheaper Chinese goods in return for port access, control, priority.

Just over our backyard fence.

What’s the status of those ports now? What Chinese ships, containing what things, are in those ports today?

Whatever you say ...

No one does business in China without CCP approval which is control which makes them not private. The PLA owns the rest.

The Chinese attacked Vietnam in 1979. But Vietnam was tougher than they thought.

Thank you, Jimmy CaCaCarter, for giving the Panama Canal back to the locals. They immediately made deals with ChiCom companies to control both Caribbean and Pacific entrances.

It will never happen. Geography is against the Chinese. The Caribbean will always be dependent on its northern neighbors. Europe will also have influence as well. China can pour all the money it wants into the region but geography will cause it to always lose.

“We financed this.”

Offshoring cheaper than cheap production labor for $$$ profits, ya mean?

Buying more and more from K Mart, Walmart, dollar stores, Big Lots and Amazon, ya mean?

Tolerating cheaper, lower quality and easily worn or broken merchandise, more and more, ya mean?

Allowing a lot of counterfeit products in, ya mean?

Goes way beyond that.

Any manufacturing in China was only allowed to take place if
the business supplied all proprietary procedures and patent
information that applied to what was going to take place on
site in China.

All our automation processes, all our technology, we handed
it over. We gave China 50-70 years of technology they didn’t
have to lift a finger to research on their own.

Our corporations sold us out. Private businesses did too.

And while some would say, well you bought the goods they
were making, there were no alternate sources in short
order.

ABC Australia female presenter guffawed loudly in approval, when an interview with the Barbadian PM ended with him saying there would be no referendum on the decision to abandon the Monarchy. not necessary.

the next day - horrified at the Trump UAE/Bahrain peace deals - ABC Australia male presenter was outraged there had been no referendum in UAE/Bahrain before they signed on!

Frightening what so many Americans have done to our country, for better profit. They got theirs, I guess, and now we can all go fish.

Nixon kissed China. The Clintons were buddies with ChiComs. W kissed China. Obama was a mashup.

American labor rates will be leveled down to world labor rates before too long, after our economy crashes hard. As desired by the world elites. Don’t know that it’s avoidable, with apparently only PDJT in DC giving a damn about working Americans’ futures.

And now, China owns our drug supply. For our military personnel, too. As you said, we gave them the recipes.

Americans better WISE UP/
Key swamp demons were making fortunes when they allowed US companies in a number of industries including pharma, computer; and electrical as well metal fabrication components even bicycles relocate their factories in China . To the point where China was our sole supplier. The money the CCP has now comes from US .If we play our Chinese checkers right we can really turn things around for the better not only here but in China as well.
