I believe that every year the Golden State suffers from Santa Ana winds.

Santa Ana winds affect only southwestern California, i.e., Santa Barbara, LA, Orange and San Diego Counties. California's wildfires this summer are all in northern California, and what really kicked those off was a massive dry lightning storm covering about 30,000 square miles.

Then high winds from the same storm blew the resulting fires into mammoth ones over the next few days. Those winds were from west to east. Santa Ana winds are east to west.
