Pa. police are learning that if you play football, they will come even amid the coronavirus.
This high school pigskin phenomena of attracting crowds far larger than coronavirus-inspired limits allow has law enforcement officials in Allegheny County scratching their heads, as KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh reports:
Over the past weekend, many high school games in western Pa. appeared to exceed the limits on crowd size set down by the Allegheny County Health Department.
Parents and fans said it was their right watch -- and they showed up in droves.
Now, Allegheny County officials tell KDKA they are considering enforcement options to block those big crowds but many appear baffled by the challenge of keeping people away from the annual fall tradition of high school football.
West Mifflin is a pretty large borough and people want to see their football. I dont know how they expect schools to stop it, West Mifflin athletic director Scott Stephenson told KDKA after his teams home game broke all kinds of COVID-19 crowd limits over the weekend.
More details from KDKA:
At the Thomas Jefferson-West Mifflin game, close to 600 parents, boosters and fans showed up to root for their schools, far in excess of the limited number of tickets West Mifflin made available.
Stephenson told KDKA he had no choice but to let them in:
People are gonna show up anyway. There were people threatening and called us, said, I dont care if youre not having fans because were coming any way and what do we do at that point? he said.
Here was the scene in West Mifflin:
The county is considering enforcement options after nearly 600 people showed up to the Thomas Jefferson-West Mifflin game. "We'll deal with them, but I dont know how they expect us to stop these people," said the athletic director. https://t.co/UIBJ1jz1PC KDKA (@KDKA) September 15, 2020
As a result of such COVID-flouting football crowds, Allegheny County spokesperson Amie Downs says the county health department is considering its options to control those football crowds after this weekends games generated numerous complaints, but didnt elaborate.
Current county guidelines allow multiple groups or pods of people limited to 100, KDKA writes, adding: These groups could be teams, coaches, cheerleaders, or groups of fans but in all cases they must be social distanced in the stands and in separate sections.
At West Mifflins recent game, most fans wore masks but were clumped together in the stands in apparent violation of county rules.
Stephenson all but shrugged in his response to KDKA, saying such rules are beyond the districts power to enforce:
It is what it is, I guess. If theres repercussions, theres repercussions. I mean, well deal with them, but I dont know how they expect us to stop these people.
Allegheny's own restrictions were not affected by the Federal Court decision.

FReepmail me to be added to the list.
I’m glad people are saying F.U. and showing up anyway.
Gonna be big news when they all start dropping dead from Covid just for going to a football game. Just like the thousands overwhelming Texas hospitals since they recklessly reopened /s
The health dept better get with the program or they are going to find their funding get cut or the director fired. I guess they forgot that the voters are the one going to the games.
The authorities are very worried about people catching now that so few are dying of it.
The high schools have led the way! No wonder: NCAA and NFL are big business. But HS FB is religion in many places.
And what about Trump’s convention speech on the White House grounds? That was thought by some to be a super spreader event.
Ditto Trump’s speech at Mt. Rushmore. At both events, the media dutifully noted how few people were wearing masks. It’s almost as if they cared more about how many wore masks, then reporting on the content of Trump’s speeches.
If masks work, who cares if they show up. Right?

BOL!

I am going to start a thread called “10 Reasons to be a Biden voter.” Reason #1: You think the virus came from a motorcycle rally in South Dakota and not a lab in China.
Logic is a racist White privilege concept.
How do masks make non binary folk feel, that’s the question...
Isn’t this the same state where the federal court said the Governor’s lockdown restrictions are illegal?
Same State...read my opening post.
Allegheny County set its own limit at 100, tighter than the overturned PA limit of 250.
Court ruling only addressed the PA limits.
Yes. But if you read the article (FR heresy, I know) it says that since Allegheny County has it’s own health department they can impose their own restrictions. Somebody needs to sue them separately.
High School Football Trivia:
The largest crowd to ever watch a high-school football game was 120,000. The game between the Chicago public school champion and the Catholic school champion was played at Soldier Field in 1927.
So....who wants to take a run at the record??
My apologies. Between working and keeping an eye on a live stream where they’re righting a train derailment in Kansas City, FR only has 1/4 my attention.
I’m not a good multi-tasker.
One wonders if PA’s interesting health director enjoys football. You know, being a guy and all...
Great idea. Have you heard how many died from covid from Sturgis? Been strangely silent on that topic.
