66 is not I-70 KC to STL. It is I-44 all the way in MO from STL to Joplin. In places you can still drive on 66. Rolla to St. James has the Outer road, which is actually 66.

Thanks for fixing my “I” mistake. I’ve just been on that Missouri stretch a couple of times and the STL to Chicago once.

The 2-lane of old 66 along I-44 in Oklahoma is generally several miles off the interstate. It’s not at all convenient to hop back and forth between the two. I drove it once and it was easily twice the time from Tulsa to OKC. In the 70s when I was driving lots from OKC to Santa Fe and Albuquerque, the I-40 bypass around Tucumcari had not been built yet so the interstate routed back onto 66. There was a drive-in joint in Tucumcari that had green chili cheese burgers that were amazing.
