You might want to look at a map.
66 is not I-70 KC to STL. It is I-44 all the way in MO from STL to Joplin. In places you can still drive on 66. Rolla to St. James has the Outer road, which is actually 66.

The 2-lane of old 66 along I-44 in Oklahoma is generally several miles off the interstate. Its not at all convenient to hop back and forth between the two. I drove it once and it was easily twice the time from Tulsa to OKC. In the 70s when I was driving lots from OKC to Santa Fe and Albuquerque, the I-40 bypass around Tucumcari had not been built yet so the interstate routed back onto 66. There was a drive-in joint in Tucumcari that had green chili cheese burgers that were amazing.
