I think if you present it to him as a duty where he could do the most good, he might acquiesce. The only hint I had that Roberts might not be the right type of Justice was his popularity on the cocktail circuit. He was too popular with too many kinds of people. Cruz will never be accused of having a perfect crease in his pants or being a cordial, diplomatic type.

I think given the realities, Cruz is never going to be President even though he would be a great one. Accepting a nomination for a Justice tthe Supreme Court, and then later as the Chief Justice would best serve the nation and leave him with a huge lasting legacy.

Cruz will be in for a tough re-election battle in 2024. I sure hope he takes it. No way that Master Bader Ginsberg makes it another 4 years.
