I’m no fan of Biden, but I just see this as cleaning up a photo to hide distracting information. I remove electrical wires from some of my photos to clean them up. If this photo was not about pro sports, I’d understand why they took it out. The photo looks better and focuses on the subject at hand with less mental clutter.

I just see this as cleaning up a photo to hide distracting information.I disagree. While you did it to improve the aesthetic of your photo, a news organization should not feel compelled to do the same.
I am not as willing as you perhaps seem to be to give CNN a free pass on this.

As a government employee in the Department of Defense, we were not allowed to alter photographs, unless we documented the changes, and the documents accompanied the photograph.

It's something that actually happened. The news altered a historical fact in order to save a candidate from dealing with a potentially politically incorrect situation. Down the memory hole!
