Rochester officials announce police reforms after death of Daniel Prude

Daniel Prude died of "complications of asphyxia in the setting of physical restraint,” with the drug PCP listed as a contributing factor, according to an autopsy report from Monroe County Medical Examiner Nadia Granger.

Rochestwer mayor Warren announced that seven officers had been suspended over the incident and New York Attorney General Letitia James said she has empowered a state grand jury to investigate.

The man’s brother, Joe Prude, said he had mental health and drug problems and had been acting out. Joe Prude called 911 and Prude was hospitalized for about three hours for a mental health check.

Prude had been visiting from Chicago and returned to his brother’s home, where he began acting out again. Joe Prude said he again called police, this time resulting in the incident shown.

The videos show officers found Prude naked in the middle of a street.

While handcuffed, Prude spoke in a nonsensical manner, at one point asking officers for a gun. The officers placed a spit hood on the 41-year-old because he said he had COVID-19.

At one point, it appeared Prude stopped breathing. Paramedics tried to revive him and he was put on life support at a hospital, but died seven days later.

Michael Mazzeo, president of the union representing city officers, said his members had been told they did nothing wrong in their response to Prude.

The videos sparked four consecutive nights of protests in Rochester. Demonstrators who refused to disperse Saturday night were met with tear gas and pepper balls deployed by police, who said protesters threw bottles, rocks, and fireworks at them.

Singletary and the mayor both stated they received intelligence that “outside agitators” to participate in the protests.

“We have arrested people providing addresses from Alaska to Massachusetts and other parts of the country,” Singletary said.

You know wathcing the protest/riots over this man there they are chanting his name and acting out. Did one person in these crowds ever even know who this man is no they didn’t. Why didn’t someone from this crowd help this man before this happened. He obviously had drug problems where was the community to help? They are all blaming someone other than Daniel.

It’s not Daniels fault this happened they say it’s the police. The police were the only ones who even came out to help him and it did not turn out well. But who is responsible before the police come?

I am not a medical professional but it seems to me that the drug PCP is the primary factor leading to his death.

If Prude had not been on PCP he would not have been acting out.

If he had not been on PCP he would not have been in contact with the police.

If he had not been on PCP he would not have been in a spit hood.

If he had not been on PCP he would not have been restrained.

In all respects, if he had not been on PCP he would not be dead.

“with the drug PCP listed as a contributing factor”
That’s all I needed to read.

PCP has no legal human or veterinary use.

Ketamine is PCP-lite. It was used as an anesthetic in ECT shock shops.

Ketamine is used today as a short term anesthetic in many countries for field rescue - i.e., extracting people from car wreckage, etc.

Here’s the deal. When you call cops about your mentally ill son, brother, father etc. it is because you feel frightened by their being out of control. You don’t want the cops riding in and killing them, you want someone to take him to the hospital and check him in.

Instead, the cops either tell you he is not a threat or sometimes something awful like this happens. We, the caretakers of society, stuck on our own with our mentally ill sons, brothers, fathers with little or no help from society or government need some practical treatment options for coping with the mentally ill. It is ridiculous that you have to wait until your mentally ill son, brother, father is ready to commit either suicide or murder before you can get some outside interest in your problem.

This poor dude was mentally ill. Cops only know how to handle criminals. Jails are being used to cope with mentally ill. That is a crime in itself. The criminal justice system is no better at dealing with the mentally ill than are we hapless caregivers.

Kinda like "schools" are essentially daycare centers, run by communists.

Yep - another criminal does the OD death dance and it’s the cops fault because they didn’t have his whole medical profile on-hand....

This is not a race issue.
This is not a failure of Police.

A troubled young man self medicated to eliminate his inner demons
He should have been in an institution under professional care.
The liberal do-gooders killed Mr. Prude

The problem is that when a mentally ill person is physically robust and threatening to others confinement is necessary to protect the rest of society.

We already have jails and they are suitable for this confinement.

And you are right -- I am placing more value on the lives of innocent normal people than on the mentally ill. I think this is morally correct.

The police were not trying to kill him, but when he is spitting they put the spit hood on him. It was an accident. If he had not been spitting, he would be alive today. How hard is it to not spit on the cops?

PCP was the cause of this dirtbags death!

PCP makes pain all but irrelevant to the user.

In virtually all cases of people who are arrested while under the influence of PCP, they have to be physically subdued in a violent manner - they do not feel pain!

Takes a lot of Cops and a lot of force to subdue a PCP user!

Not the Cops fault the dirtbag died!

And thus the myth of superhuman strength is forwarded re: PCP use.
