Amazon drivers are reportedly competing against each other to snag new orders by hanging smartphones in trees outside Whole Foods stores

Interesting story, apparently some people are using some tactic to trick Amazon into sending calls to them first.

I don't understand it all, and it links to a Bloomberg story, so I am not copying even Business Insider, just to be cautious, but feel free to link to the story.

I am sure lots of FReepers understand it.

I would need to see it happen a few times to really get the concept. Phones in trees. Better than Snakes on a plane, I guess.

Not as good as ants in the pants.

Easter Egg hunt.

Go to Whole Foods and check the trees.

Snag the phone(s) you want and get them unlocked at a local shop.

Amazon tracks the gps on the phones of the couriers. The ones closest to the Whole Foods when an order comes in will get the job. Some couriers don’t want to.wait near the Whole Foods all day so they hang a phone with the courier app in a tree near the store, then when an order comes in the phone in the tree forwards the order to their real phone

They are trying to game the system.

It’s Christmas at Whole Foods! Go there, see abandoned phones, take phones, offer to return lost phones for reward or recycle ‘em and save the planet. ;)

That sounds like a great tree to pick free phones from.

So the Amazon driver that delivered your boxed up groceries may have also “boxed up” another driver?

The app pings the closest delivery driver to the market; the tree in front of the market is 30 feet closer than the closest parking space, therefore the group that has the cell phone in the tree gets the instant delivery order vs the guy who's been sitting there waiting all day in the parking lot.

Once an order is assigned, another driver comes up and syncs their phone with the one hanging in the tree so they can take the next order. Some groups use multiple phones to keep from getting discovered. It's a slight bug in Amazon's app that supports dual screen phones & tablets (or multi-app displays) that is the core of how this all works.

The real story is if you want a free cell phone, go look at the trees near Whole Foods.

My son in law was doing this for a while in Bellevue (Seattle area). He figured out that being close meant getting the best orders. He made decent money while he was doing it - like $500 a day.

I wonder if they’re using a noose to hang the phones in the trees?
