“Her first finding: Many parents who advocated for the integration of public schools, specifically this public school, did not end up enrolling their children. Instead, they chose to send their children to established schools with a history of success. This choice—made predominantly by white families—is why the school has struggled, Joffe-Walt says.”

She’d better check the political leanings and re-think because the narrative is slipping with this “finding”.

Let me help you on this one. In a way, it is correct. If whites, and particularly Asians, are attending a crappy school (i.e., any government school), they quickly realize that their kids are not being educated. Generally, they don’t know why, although they can easily find out, simply by asking any home schooler. But since home schoolers are religious nutcases, they don’t ask.

But they DO KNOW that their kids aren’t learning jack (it’s not very hard, for example, when you see your kids doing ONLY sight-words for K through 3rd grade when you know they should be learning reading by 1st grade, at the latest) - so you, as a white/Asian parent RESPOND, which means going outside of the schools to get your kids educated, as in After School Learning Centers. The kids finally learn, their scores go up, but....

...guess who gets all the CREDIT, not Slyvan or Kumon, but the public schools. So, in an indirect way, you’ve ‘helped’ the public schools raise ‘their’ test scores...and therefore, if you kids aren’t enrolled there, there’s no way those schools can take the ‘credit’ for doing such a ‘great job’.
