FAUCI: "And right now people should not be, there’s no reason to be walking around with a mask. When you’re in the middle of an outbreak, wearing a mask might make people feel a little bit better, and it might even block a droplet; but it is not providing the perfect protection that people think that it is. And often, there are unintended consequences: people keep fiddling with the mask and they keep touching their face."

REPORTER: "And can you get some schmutz sort of staying inside there?"

FAUCI: "Of course, of course, but when you think masks, you should think of healthcare providers needing them and people who are ill.”

Fauci was correct. The mask is not great at protecting yourself. They are good at protecting others, like the people you are treating in a hospital. Because in the early stage of the pandemic, they needed the masks for hospital workers. Such workers have to change their masks often and go through a number of masks in a day. Fauci was thinking about mask shortages. He was worried that people would hoard them like we saw with toilet paper.
