Lot of variables there. Range-to-target & visibility are 2 of them. Rich was killed in the early morning hours. If the shots were fired from beyond a minimal range it might have argued for center-of-mass targeting. Might also explain why he wasn’t robbed.

maybe it was a family member that knocked him off after finding out that he was leaking information? I seem to remember that the family did interfere with the police investigation. His family apparently knew a lot more that what was released to the public.
