His thinking provokes an interesting logical dilemma. If he actually did go back in time and kill Jesus so that Christianity never undermined the Roman Empire then he likely never would have been born. The New World was largely populated by Christian dissents who were trying to escape the monarchies of Europe (descendants of the Roman aristocracy) to gain religious freedom. So who was it that killed Jesus if he was never born?
Its kind of like the scene in the Matrix where Cypher is about to kill Neo (the One) and asks Trinity “How could he be the one if he is dead. I mean, it would take a miracle to save him now.” Just then Tank gets up from being shot and blows Cypher away to save Neo.
