Donald Trump says he is handing over almost $1 billion to fallen photo giant Kodak to manufacture pharma ingredients in the U.S. as part of plan to tackle coronavirus

President Donald Trump officially announced that his administration is giving camera brand Eastman Kodak a $765 million loan to start producing pharmaceutical ingredients in the country, so the U.S. is less reliant on foreign supply chains amid the coronavirus pandemic.

'It's a great name when you think about it. Such a great name. Was one of the great brands of the world. Then people went digital and Kodak didn't follow, but now under very extraordinary leadership they are following and they are doing something that's a different field,' Trump said from the White House podium Tuesday.

He called it a 'breakthrough in bringing pharmaceutical manufacturing to the United States' and said it would bring new jobs to both Rochester, New York and Minnesota - the latter of which the Trump campaign is eying as a potential swing state.

Wonderful news.

Rochester deserves it despite the nearby Upstate libtards that made it illegal to pre-warm one’s car in the dead of winter.

I never understood why Donald didn’t direct such “lonesome” stocks in place of cash in the stimulus bill. Good to hold onto for speculators who didn’t need a handout.

My brother who died in 1995 worked for Kodak at the Elmgrove Plant in Gates, NY. That’s where he met my sister-in-law. He started working there after he was discharged from the Army in 1968.

“Rochester deserves it despite the nearby Upstate libtards that made it illegal to pre-warm one’s car in the dead of winter”

Making it the illegal is really nonsensical, and was considered a risk to having a car stolen by yoots, however engineers agree that starting up your car and getting it rolling warms up not only the engine but the transmission and differential (if applicable), brakes etc...

I’ve found that the heating system is delivering warmish air within a mile.

Years ago when I didn’t have a working car, I used to travel 10 miles to work on a motorcycle. In the dead of winter I had to switch a bicycle because it was warmer.

Under-utilized manufacturing capacity. Get the products out of Red Chinese factories and into American facilities.

Trump gets stuff done.

I wonder why he is not using any of the existing pharmaceutical companies for this? Were they unwilling? Too tied to their overseas operations/suppliers?

Are these precursor chemicals that existing pharmaceuticals have no interest in producting?

How is Trump going to protect these rebuilt industries from cheaper labor overseas? There needs to be tariffs. And across the board protective tariffs, not just on China. Though I don’t mind if China has a higher tariff than other countries.

And if you protect the precursor chemicals, then you also need to protect the final drugs from competitors made overseas using cheaper components.

And then the new executive orders allowing drug imports from overseas needs to also apply the tariff, unless the drug was manufactured in the US.

Very possible.

I’m not sure big pharma can be trusted to act in American interest. But Trade policy needs to make Big Pharma’s interest coincide with American interest. I know Trump understands that.

It’s also possible that Big Pharma was playing hard ball negotiation and asking for more than necessary. That is usually a mistake to try with Trump.

“Trump gets stuff done.”

He’s only just getting started. It would be a national tragedy on every imaginable level if he’s not reelected.

“Maybe big pharma doesnt want to play with Trump”

Maybe he’s had a belly full of Big Pharma and its compromised bitches like Fauci the last six months. Now it’s time to find a “virgin” company who will just do its job with minimal politics, payoffs, etc., and that appreciates the opportunity.

Sadly, the Left has shown that they WILL go after their enemies if given power.
That means you and me, brother. "Gird your loins..."

a brilliant move by Trump, by Jove. And keeps a formerly great company from falling by the wayside because of changing technologies. Kills two birds with one stone. Saves a major company that has current facilities and capacity to achieve our pharmaceutical aims, and brings necessary and vital medicine production back into our own Country, and out of the clutches of foreign internationals. Win, win. Bravo, President Trump, the one man capable of taking this ball and running with it.

I worked in the Elmgrove plant back in 71 - putting shutter assemblies together for the pocket camera (tweezers and small springs work) ...assembly line work sucked bad enough it was a good thing the Elmgrove Lounge was just down the street at quitting time.

Big Pharma is suppressing HCQ and other low-cost therapeutics, so Trump is going around them in the short term to deal with Covid. Long term, he’ll deal with the trade policy and regulatory issues, but right now this can’t wait.

I have worked at Elmgrove 3 times over the years and still do. It’s now called The Rochester Technology Park. It’s a shadow of what it once was. The old plant has been sectioned off and is rented to various companies. It still has lots of empty space.
