Why was John D. Rockefeller involved in medical research and colleges and universities? Why was Andrew Carnegie involved in building schools and libraries?
A lot of wealthy men get to a point where they’ve amassed more wealth than they could possibly spend on anything they could ever want for themselves and decide that the best way to establish a legacy that plants their names in the history books is to use their wealth on causes they believe in. Gates doesn’t make money on vaccines. The Gates Foundation does not make money on vaccines. Their SEC filings show this. What do they do? When somebody has research that looks good but isn’t getting funding from other sources, they step in and provide that funding in the form of grants. Not loans. Not stock options. Grants.
Gates also gives tons of money away for things like education (over $2 Billion in scholarships), malaria prevention (e.g. mosquito nets), increasing farming productivity in rural Africa, and so on. But you never hear people complain about Gates buying mosquito nets for people because that’s not their real issue. In fact, Bill Gates isn’t their real issue.
So why all the anti-Gates propaganda? It’s the anti-vaxxer crowd looking to establish a Boogieman. They don’t like vaccines because they think it’s healthier to get polio and smallpox and die than it is to get vaccinated against them. But that doesn’t sell well because most people understand that’s ludicrous. So instead they claim Bill Gates is some evil mastermind and tie all sorts of conspiracy theories to him about how he’s going to use vaccines to track people or sterilize them or kill them or mind control them (whatever nonsense you can imagine). Bill Gates gives a lot of money away to researchers developing vaccines against diseases that kill lots of people. If vaccines are all bad, then Gates must be really bad. So instead of “Orange man bad!”, we get “Windows man bad!”
