The founder was saying that cities would be redesigned based on his new technology during the prerelease hype. Then when it was released, it was clear the balance system was cool, but a powered, self-balancing scooter wasn't going to shake up civilization.

I worked one summer at HP on something called the Kangaroo.
I believe it was a PDA that flopped because like all other PDAs it had no touchscreen.

It was going to revolutionize human transportation. I think Amazon was a partner initially. People looked goofy driving them, they were outrageously expensive and, as the article said, there were several high-profile crashes.
