Former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain has died at the age of 74. Cain had been hospitalized in an Atlanta-area hospital since July 1, after testing positive for COVID-19 a few days earlier.

The tragic news of his death comes after his official Twitter account said he was making progress in his recovery from the viral infection on Monday (July 27).

Cain’s last public appearance was at President Donald Trump’s rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on June 20.

Cain made a name for himself after taking over as chairman and CEO of Godfather’s Pizza in 1986 when the chain was floundering and facing the prospect of bankruptcy. In just 14-months, he managed to right the ship, and the company started earning profits.

Cain made waves in the 2012 Republican presidential primary with his 9-9-9 tax plan, which would have replaced the current tax code with a 9% business transaction tax, a 9% personal income tax, and a 9% federal sales tax. His tax plan vaulted him to the top of the polls, but he was forced to suspend his campaign after allegations of sexual harassment surfaced.
