My grandfather fought in WW1. When asked what country his family came from, this was his answer. We left those countries. I’m an American.

My father, a WWII vet, who saw more action than most, said exactly the same thing. He was born in Poland and became a naturalized citizen in North Africa, He was very proud to be an American, and made it a point for us not to use hyphens.
