The Chinese consulate in San Francisco is harboring a visiting Chinese researcher, after the person was interviewed by the FBI over concealing her ties to the Chinese military to obtain a visa, according to a court document filed on July 20.
Tang Juan, a researcher at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis), was charged on June 26 with visa fraud for making false statements on her visa application for a J-1 non-immigrant visa, which is issued to individuals participating in work-and-study-based exchange visitor programs.
The revelations came after the United States ordered the Chinese consulate in Houston to close to “protect American intellectual property.”
She stated on her visa application that she never served in the Chinese military, officially known as the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). However, an FBI open-source search on published scientific papers showed that she had been employed as a researcher at the Air Force Military Medical University.
The university was formerly known as the Fourth Military Medical University (FMMU) and is subordinate to the Air Force branch of the PLA, according to the school’s website. The university is located in Xi’an, the capital of northwestern China’s Shaanxi Province.
The FBI also found publicly-available photographs of Tang in the uniform of the civilian cadre of the PLA.
According to China’s Ministry of National Defense, civilian cadres are active military personnel without military rank. They are either appointed to junior technical positions or clerical ranks and above.
Tang was interviewed by the FBI at her residence in Davis, California, on June 20 during which she denied serving in the Chinese military, and said she had worn the military uniform because it was a requirement for attending FMMU. Her residence was also searched by the FBI on the same day.

Well, hopefully she enjoys spending the rest of her life there. The minute she tries to leave, she’s subject to arrest.

Just start shelling the Consulate until they give up the spy. It’s not like the Chinese like us and we worry about offending them. Just move some mobile artillery up the the gates and fir a few warning shots through their front door.
