ully self-driving vehicles that can go where they please and operate anywhere regulators allow them to do so are a tricky thing to think about, for three reasons.
First of all, the technology isnt here yet. Its hard to believe in it until it exists, and its hard to know how long until it is truly available.
Secondly, as a person who drives a Tesla Model 3 with the Full Self-Driving package, I see a handful of edge cases just in my measly amount of driving that seem tricky and hard to resolve.
Sometimes the problem is confusing lines at odd intersections, sometimes how roads merge, sometimes theres challenging visibility turning onto roads with fast-moving traffic (not just human visibility, but also camera and radar visibility).
Perhaps all of these edge cases are not as hard as they seem, but when the system cant handle them just in my below-average driving in a nice area, it boggles my mind to think about how broad the issue must be across the world, or even just across one state.

Let’s see it navigate one of those double traffic circles where you have no idea who has the right of way.
Hate those things.
Never let a car potentially programmed by Progressives do the driving.
Wait until it’s fully function and mandatory on all cars. That’s when travel will be restricted. Yet another shiny thing that eats away at freedom.
The only way for fully automated cars to work safely is when ALL cars are self-driving. All following preprogrammed rules. No self-driving vehicle is safe to operate in a mixed environment where human unpredictability is a factor.

I think there’s an entire rewrite coming out soon that will make problems with the current system irrelevant.
Why not just plug yourself into the Matrix?
FSD will be great for long trips. Im fine with driving at waypoints, its the multi-hundred-mile stretches of clearly marked road, no complications, and stark raging boredom as I micro manage every second for hours.
Some do willingly. Freedom is too difficult for them to handle. They would rather be told what to do and think. I have met several of this type of people over the years.
Thankfully, car lovers are a giant. After all, when was the last time you heard of some animal rights nitwit throwing paint on a car in protest of its fine Corinthian leather”?
“Lets see it navigate one of those double traffic circles where you have no idea who has the right of way. Hate those things.”
totally, the couple of those they built around here are pretty much jut free-for-all zones ... some of the exits are three and four lanes, and this from a two lane circle ... no way any self-driving car could handle such insanity ...
So true. There is a lot of construction activity on main roads near my home. Barriers and orange traffic cones everywhere. Three lanes quickly reducing to one via orange cones. Then there is the road worker with a "Slow" and "Stop" sign in his hand stepping between the cones and stopping traffic in your lane, or motioning you to continue even though the signal light is lit up red. No way a self-driving vehicle can figure this out. Then there are the idiots who try to speed up around you to cut in front of you from an improper lane - had a guy try that a couple days ago but I was faster and he almost collided with a concrete barrier when he had to slam on the brakes - ha!
To me, it seems Musk has a full plate already. Rather than jump into robocars, I think he ought to build in and around his existing ventures.
I’ve driven extensively in Washington, D.C. and for several of the reasons mentioned I don’t believe driverless will work there.
I actually had a FReeper trot out the age old excuse, "It can't happen here."
