Well of course. And if you have enough years to retire, I’m guessing (unless you’ve been ‘acquiring stuff’ over the years) you don’t just resign. Loss of pension would hurt if it’s like most public service pensions.

I think it would be worse than just that. Suppose you get tired of waiting for the retirement paperwork to go through. So you just quit. You won’t get a pension. And you won’t have any post-retirement health insurance. It’s the no health insurance part that could really destroy you.
