I hate the misuse of “they” to indicate a single person.
It is wrong and unnecessary. The person identified as “they” is later correctly identified as “him”.
Language matters.
Too late; that ship has sailed. I don’t like it either.
“They” is used to avoid having to apply an “arbitrary social construct gender label” when the subjective gender choices of a person are unknown. Language does matter, but it matters most in some forms of psychosis. And there is a lot of that going around.
