The original Redskins was a Boston team, Boston Braves....................
> I thought it was Native Americans who came up with the name “Redskins” themselves <
I did a little reading about that. There are a couple of different theories about the origin of the word.
1. The Native Americans started calling themselves redskins to differentiate themselves from the black and white people they ran into.
2. Early white settlers called the Native Americans redskins because of the red war paint they wore.
Notice that in neither theory is the word redskin derogatory! No matter. The word is not PC. Its gonna go. Bet on it.
Google Walter Blackie Wetzel. He designed the current logo back in 1972. The Redskins name was first used in 1933. No protests over the name occurred until 1968. BLACKFOOT Indian leader Walter Blackie Wetzel drew the design in 1972, and said to the Washington Post in 2002, "It made us all so proud to have an Indian in a big-time team. It's only a small group of radicals who oppose those names. Real Indians are proud of Indians."
His drawing (the current team logo) was inspired by Chief Two Guns White Calf.
