I had a couple of senior executives in the grocery business warn me about this weeks ago. Two things are driving this:
1. Banks in many states have curtailed or severely limited their direct transactions with customers, so people are only going to the bank for critical transactions. Exchanging cash isn't very critical for most customers.
2. Many grocery stores have shut down their coin exchange machines where customers can exchange piles of coins for a small fee.

3. One or more of the U.S. mints has shut down their operations several times due to COVID-19 outbreaks among the employees.
