I remember an interview where someone referred to him as a world leader. He corrected them, saying, I am not a world leader, I am president of the Russian people...

Which I took to mean, not president of Russia, but of the Russian *people*. Which means he hopes sooner or later to reincorporate at least those lands (eastern Ukraine, possibly Belarus, and other regions) where Russians are a significant presence.

At least, thats the way I took it. That seems to be his stance in general.

Territorial expansion is a way of life for Russia. From a Russian ruler’s perspective, there are two kinds of people on the planet - current Russians and future Russians.
