Gov. Roy Cooper backed down Tuesday from a promise to announce a school reopening plan by July 1. Instead of the much-anticipated decision, his office sent a statement at 8:30 p.m. saying his Wednesday news conference "will not include an announcement on how statewide K-12 public schools will open this coming school year."
The delay comes less than six weeks before schools are scheduled to open Aug. 17 for 1.5 million North Carolina students. Local school districts were poised to roll out plans this week.
"Our basic plans are ready to go," Iredell-Statesville Schools board Chair Martin Page said Tuesday. He said he expected a sleepless night because the uncertainty has been so tough on everyone.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board called a meeting for 7 p.m. Wednesday, with the agenda calling for a vote on a reopening plan.
The statement from the governor's office includes no explanation for the delay and no revised date for a decision.
A source with knowledge of the discussions had heard that Cooper is still grappling with conflicting demands related to the spread of the coronavirus and the need to get students back to school.
As Coopers self-imposed deadline approached Tuesday, officials in North Carolina, South Carolina and Washington, D.C., warned that COVID-19 cases are rising and people need to wear masks and avoid crowds.
All North Carolina districts and charter schools have been instructed to prepare three plans -- one for reopening at full capacity, one for opening at 50% capacity and one to continue remote learning, with buildings remaining closed.
Even the least-restrictive option would require additional sanitizing of schools and buses, health screenings as students arrive and restricted use of common spaces, including cafeterias.

This school thing is going to be fun to watch in democratic states I live in California and there every which Way but Sunday in fact they just put out a survey to try to see what the parents want to do first and they give you the choice of sending your kid to school to three or five days a week we do online learning in entirety they give three or four different answers on social distancing and masks and its really quite hilarious to watch anybody following the stupid bug realize the thing is over oh VER and so all these Democrats are just trying to think how can we milk this until the election and theyre not gonna be able to sell the school thing is coming up like a freight train in August and so well see what happens but youre going to see the Democrats states are the ones are going to have the most difficulty
In other news, Cooper just installed a wind vane on top of the executive mansion in order to determine which way the wind is blowing.
Oh yeah no doubt.
This is about the 2020 election and it has nothing to do with the Covid 19.
Bingo
Let me tell you all something about this:
I’ve been working on COVID and nothing else since February. I am adjacent to, but not employed by, public health.
The governors, responding to their voters, are asking for three things:
1) Give me your best advice to have zero cases.
2) Make sure your advice doesn’t make anybody mad or sad
3) When I decide to stop following your advice, say it’s OK and promise no one will be mad or sad.
Remember that when you are reacting to what any given politician is doing.
Keeping the schools closed will absolutely hobble the economy which is why l expect the rats to do just that. This despite numerous studies that show it is having a devastating impact on the mental health of the children. Hurting Trumps chances is the only thing that matters.
‘The governors, responding to their voters, are asking for three things:’
I’m only asking one thing of you; post a comment that makes sense...
I am not rolling on the floor laughing my 25-year-homeschooler posterior off, because that would be undignified and uncomfortable, the floor being ceramic tile.
But inside ... ah, the schadenfreude.
Since you do not reside in North Carolina and presume a great deal without any knowledge whatsoever of what is going on in this state, let me tell YOU something about the useless political hack that is cosplaying as the Governor of North Carolina:
Nothing, and I mean NOTHING this cretin has done since assuming the office has ANYTHING to do with advancing the interests of the citizens of North Carolina. EVERYTHING he has done has been brazenly political from tanking the state’s economy through his unconstitutional beer bug lockdown to cancelling the Republican Convention in Charlotte. This sorry SOB arrests those who protest the lockdown to open businesses back up YET, he allows BLM mobs to trash downtown Raleigh, Charlotte and Greensboro, pull down statues and block highways recklessly endangering people.
Cooper does not give a damn about the beer bug or the safety of the people. His ONLY interest is to thwart Republicans, damage Trump’s chances in the state and to strengthen Rat control of it.
Remember THAT when you mouthing off about situations you have not personally experienced or understand.
Cooper would have a real tough time finding his rather ample ass with both hands tied behind his back. (IMNSHO)
I bey you there are lots of perverted people that can find his ass just fine from the looks of him...and he is a wimpy sort of looking DEM too!
Disgusting TURD!
Nope. Not even slightly as far as I can tell. All they know is they hate TRUMP!
And ... IF you dont wear a mask? Well, you are irresponsible and probably just want people to die.
The farce is strong, but the fear might be stronger ... really not sure.
I think there is a real issue for colleges, specifically with students paying their own way; if they thought that most of last semester was a waste of money with no real educational benefits, they may not register for fall classes - or simply register with a real online school (if it will be the same result at a lower price).
This is getting beyond stupid. My employer is now saying we may not get significant numbers of people back into the office until THE END OF THE YEAR. If they go back to distance learning, and I’m stuck working at home six more months, my poor introvert wife is going to go postal!

Could you build a cabin or something? I’ve considered it, and we don’t have nearly as much space!
That pretty much sums it up.
You and GBA are breaths of fresh air. Thanks!
Cuomo has put his decision off til August.
