Don't know much about medieval history but I have read that the Crusades were simply a response to moslem invasions...not the other way around.

Pope Pius’ description of the invasion is entirely inaccurate, though. Jerusalem under the Muslims was a sleepy backwater, until the Crusaders showed up. Sure, there was dhimma, occasional lynch mobs, some rapes here and there. But that’s life under Islam.

Exactly; Crusaders never attacked Mecca or Medina - they were trying to take back former Christian lands.
