Self defense tactics usually involve trading space for time, so standing firm is not necessarily smart, so as you back off or move offline to cover, you are effectively demonstrating de-escalation and good faith to not have to use force/lethal force. Being on camera doing things that clearly indicate your unwillingness to use force is a good thing. Having to use it in the end may be unavoidable.

Now, if with my wife or family, I don’t think I will be too interested in much retrograde action as I probably can’t herd family and be as situationally aware as needed in a potential lethal force engagement.

The threat needs to choose wisely.

Best defense is avoidance and avoidance is directly related to situational awareness.

Pay attention, put the damn cellphone down. Your job when out, especially when with Innocents, is to be the sheepdog, having teeth and using them is the last resort.
