When California State Assemblywoman Shirley Weber introduced a bill last year to study reparations for African Americans, she was worried people wouldn't accept that racial inequality and injustice were still alive and well. Instead, the bill came up for a vote two weeks after the death of an unarmed Black man, George Floyd, at the hands of a white police officer spurred a nationwide reckoning on that very topic. It passed the assembly on June 11 with a 56-5 vote. "Maybe we'll be a model for what can happen at the federal level," Weber told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. The bill goes next to the California State Senate, where she expects it to pass and then be signed into law by the governor. The idea of reparation is nothing new and has been used around the world to compensate victims of war, rape, terror and a host of other historical injustices.

There of course was discrimination long after the end of the Civil War, and you are somehow looking at the end of slavery as both recompense and punishment in your score-settling calculus?
Of course the idea of reparations is ridiculous at this point, however. No way to track who has been mistreated via family lineage more than others. In the US or out.
And we have spent trillions trying to lift up AAs in an environment were equal access never seems to do the trick.

I say all reparations should not be put on the National Credit Card. The tone would change completely if funds were required to be paid immediately. The figure is $9T (yes p, that’s a “T”). Collection by taxation on white wealth. “Black Lives Matter” called for the immediate seizure and redistribution of all farmland from white farmers. Well, don’t be so sure. If Biden should win the POTUS a couple of things will happen almost immediately. The filibuster will be eliminated, meaning a simple majority vote in the senate would be sufficient to pass legislation through the senate. And, if should win the Dems would likely take the senate too. The second thing would be the packing of the SCOTUS. The headcount would be increased to a number sufficient to give liberals a clear majority, probably to thirteen or fifteen justices. With these changes, being they will retain the House, the Dems will have their way with whatever they want.

How about no? My parents never owned slaves. Neither did my ancestors. The United States is bursting with opportunity for anyone of any color. The law does not support awarding damages to the great grandchildren of the offended.
