I actually like that hymn, which is in our hymnal. I originally thought it was inspired by World War I, so even today when we perform it in church, visions of that war go through my mind as we sing it.
One of the only 4 men who died at Ft McHenry was a slave named William Williams who ran away from his owner and joined the Army to fight for American freedom from the British who had burned the plantation where he worked. He could have chosen to become a British subject and fight with them vs America...as a hireling, free but a subject of the Crown. The British were actively attempting to get slaves to rise up against their masters. Some did.
Key’s verse is historically accurate and describes the enemy facing America: the British, the mercenaries they hired, and the slaves hired or enticed into fighting with the British.
