NTSB: Pilot in Kobe Bryant helicopter crash may have been disoriented in fog.
KTLA NEWS ^ | June 17, 2020 | AP

The pilot of the helicopter that crashed in thick fog, killing Kobe Bryant and seven other passengers, reported he was climbing when he actually was descending, federal investigators said in documents released Wednesday.

Ara Zobayan radioed to air traffic controllers that he was climbing to 4,000 feet (1,220 meters) to get above clouds on Jan. 26 when, in fact, the helicopter was plunging toward a hillside where it crashed northwest of Los Angeles.

The report by the National Transportation Safety Board said Zobayan may have “misperceived” the angles at which he was descending and banking, which can happen when a pilot becomes disoriented in low visibility.

“Calculated apparent angles at this time show that the pilot could have misperceived both pitch and roll angles,” one report stated. “During the final descent the pilot, responding to (air traffic control), stated that they were ‘climbing to four thousand.’”

Kennedys are not very good at boating, driving, flying or skiing.

It absolutely can happen to any pilot at any time, you have about 2 seconds to get it together when entering IMC before spatial disorientation takes over

Probably wasn’t too smart in the first place to fly in that fog.

In his autobiograaphy, Jimmy Dolittle wrote that Lindberg had nearly crashed after becoming disoriented in low clouds.

That's why aircraft have instruments

Evidently those instruments don't work if there is little to no horizontal speed..

“’Conventional pilots’, i.e. Fixed Wing (airplane) pilots are not required to fly under the hood, unless they are training to obtain an Instrument-Airplane rating.”

§ 61.109(a)(3) — “3 hours of flight training in a single-engine airplane on the control and maneuvering of an airplane solely by reference to instruments...”

My understanding... Kobe orders the pilot to GO even though conditions are dangerous!

Now it's the pilot's fault?

Yep, it's the pilot's job is to make the go, no-go call. The client does not have the knowledge or experience to evaluate the conditions and risks and can't order the pilot to do anything.

Thanks, I was not aware of that regulation. I went through Navy/USMC flight training in Pensacola, 47 years ago, so never actually got a Private Pilots rating. Years later, I took my logbook to the FAA and was issued my Commercial Pilot, SEL, Rotorcraft-Helicopter and Instrument-Airplane.

They did not issue an Instrument-Helicopter because my last check ride (in a Sikorsky CH-53D) was stamped in the Log Book on the date of the flight, not in the front of the log book. Although my initial Instrument training was in a T-28, the vast majority of my actual instrument time, training and check rides were all in Helos.

Ahhh, bureaucrats!

They are perfect. Can do no wrong.

They seem to die skillfully.

They are even better at killing women.

Kobe Bryant KILLED HIMSELF (or got himself killed)

I don’t know this (obviously), but I’ll bet Kobe Bryant INSISTED (or talked the pilot into) that they make the flight because I”M “Kobe Bryant”.

And the pilot, influenced by Kobe Bryant’s superstardom and celebrity, wanted to “please” him.

NOT an accident! TOTALLY AVOIDABLE! Should NEVER have left the ground.

JFK Jr, KILLED HIMSELF, because of his ARROGANCE!

I’m a KENNEDY!

TOTALLY AVOIDABLE! Should NEVER have left the ground. It was TOO LATE! He missed his window.

I don’t get it. Why do people feel sorry for all these FOOLS? They all caused THEIR OWN deaths.

Even the passengers should have said “I’m not going, we can’t get there now before dark. Let’s go tomorrow”

“Of course, he was not a particularly experienced pilot.”

He was experienced and instrument rated.

“”Conventional pilots”, i.e. Fixed Wing (airplane) pilots are not required to fly under the hood, unless they are training to obtain an Instrument-Airplane rating.”

Wrong.

FAR 61.109 Aeronautical experience.
(3) 3 hours of flight training in a single-engine airplane on the control and maneuvering of an airplane solely by reference to instruments, including straight and level flight, constant airspeed climbs and descents, turns to a heading, recovery from unusual flight attitudes, radio communications, and the use of navigation systems/facilities and radar services appropriate to instrument flight;
