I believe it was in WFB's first book — God and Man at Yale — that he described a student publication from the a long-ago era, in which an undergraduate made the observation "perhaps people think we are insipid because we actually are insipid."

Insipid — now there’s a word worthy of wider use on regular basis. So descriptive and so applicable in a variety of situations.
