I got into an argument on a Facebook booster group for my alma mater last night, the student newspaper there has come out in favor of renaming three buildings that are named for Virginians associated with the Confederacy at some point—Turner Ashby, Stonewall Jackson, and Matthew Maury.

The discussion eventually got shut down by the mods after 500+ messages but what struck me is that while it was actually pretty civil, the side who wanted to preserve the names really got no nastier than slippery-slope arguments and some eyerolling. The pro-change side, on the other hand, called us “turds,” “racists,” “white supremacists,” mocked us, and generally argued with a terrifying level of complete and total smugness. They will not listen to opposing views. Period. They are Right and we are Evil and must be ground under by any means necessary.

Throw it back in their faces. See my previous. Demand the erasure of FDR because of his internment of Japanese-Americans. Same for Robert Byrd and his association with the KKK. The list goes on and on.

‘The past was erased, the erasure was forgotten, the lie became the truth.’
