ShareTweetFlipPrint There is a growing trend of newspapers across the country that are refusing to publish mugshot galleries because the pictures of minority criminals are supposedly reinforcing negative stereotypes.
The Tampa Bay Times announced on Monday that they would stop publishing mugshot galleries due to concerns that they “disproportionately show black and brown faces.”
“The galleries lack context and further negative stereotypes,” Tampa Bay Times executive editor Mark Katches said in a statement.

“We think the data is an important resource that our newsroom will continue to analyze and watch carefully, but the galleries alone serve little journalistic purpose,” he added.

This has been going on for years. The Minneapolis Star Tribune openly says that they don’t publish the race of the victims and perps unless it is “pertinent” to the story. Needless to say, black perp, white victim, race is never “pertinent”, white perp black victim, race is ALWAYS pertinent. Some years ago the Star Tribune ran a headline about a “racist” incident in South Minneapolis, a 12-year-old white kid had pushed a 12 year old black kid off his bicycle. They both lived on the same block were in the same class at school, and there was absolutely no evidence of it being a “racist” incident. Yet, the Star Tribune had the story on the front page above the fold for 2 or 3 days. They even had an editorial about the incident. It has only gotten worse since then.
So just run the white mugshots.

There were papers still publishing mugshots? They stopped that in my local paper back in the 70s along with not mentioning the race of the perp because that could lead to racism.
I’m glad we solved racism back in the 70s.
Mugshot galleries aren’t ‘news’ and those arrested may see charges dropped. But big data loves snooping in.

IOW it is incumbent on the newspapers to keep the reality of black on everyone crime quiet. Last night for instance here near Jacksonville two people were murdered. A witness was interviewed by the police and according to the news paper further identifying info was not available. Lately that has been a trend. So lets review. Two guys murdered. One guy saw the perps. To believe he did not provide such simple identifying info as what color they were, this happened in about a 95% minority area, is ludicrous. I bet had it been a white guy with a trump sticker on his get away car we would have everything including picture, car, license number and last known address.
At 90, Richard Kimble should be easy to apprehend.
If they don’t say what race the perp is, you know what race the perp is.
Tv stations too. WRAL in Raleigh NC ( big leftist station these days) just stopped doing it on their website. Too bad, it was always amusing and often amazing.
No, they don't "disproportionately show black and brown faces." If these are the people committing crimes and getting arrested then that is real world. That's the way it is. This is not disproportionate, this is who is getting arrested.
Long past time for the TB Times (and others) to decide if they want to accurately report the news, or if they want to report propaganda information to support an agenda. Looks like the TB Times has made it's decision, and is jumping into the cesspool of being a propaganda source. Great choice, Pravda. :-/
