Top Democrats introduce bill to stop Trump's Germany withdrawal

A pair of top Democrats has introduced a bill aimed at blocking President Trump’s plan to withdraw thousands of U.S. troops from Germany.

The bill, introduced by Senate Foreign Relations Committee ranking member Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) and House Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.) in their respective chambers, would prohibit funding to implement a withdrawal in Europe unless several conditions are met.

“The current U.S. troop presence in Germany is in the U.S. national security interest. Full stop,” Menendez said in a statement. “The administration has made no effort to explain how our country is stronger because of this drawdown decision. Because we’re not. This drawdown weakens America and Europe. And Vladimir Putin understands and appreciates that better than anyone.”

In his own statement, Engel said that “rather than heeding the overwhelming bipartisan rebuke from Congress about this scheme and its catastrophic consequences, President Trump has once again made foreign policy decisions based solely on his absurd affection for Vladimir Putin, a murderous dictator who has attacked America and our allies.”

Trump confirmed Monday that he plans to slash the number of U.S. troops in Germany, which is home to the U.S. military’s European and Africa command headquarters.

Trump, faulting Germany for not meeting NATO’s defense spending goal, said he would cut the number of troops to 25,000. There are about 35,000 troops there now, and the number can go as high as 52,000.

In 2014, NATO countries agreed to each spend 2 percent of their gross domestic products on their defense budgets by 2024. Just eight countries are at the 2 percent mark right now. Several others have plans to meet it by the deadline, but Germany is not on track to meet the goal.

Are you old enough to remember the “peace dividend” era of Pappy Bush’s tenure?

Back in the day some German high mucky muck said we shouldn’t shut down bases in Germany because it would damage their local economy.

“What exactly did Putin do to tick off US Marxists?”

A lot of it started when the Russian parliament passed anti-sodomy legislation. That’s when Obama decided to boycott the Olympics at Sochi.
Also, the Dems got ticked when that Pussy group was punished for defiling a church.

Every time a Russian musician, who is perceived as having a good relationship with Putin, has a performance in New York, there is a big protest by gay groups.

Putin ain’t wack.

He supports Orthodox Christianity.

He does not support gays, alphabet soup gender-benders and child sexual groomers.

He funds his own pipelines, cutting out the globalists.

He is not a globalist. He is a nationalist.

He may be on track as President for Life.

He is intimately acquainted with the international IC and not owned by them.

Pass it in the House and it’ll die in the Senate. Even if it passed the Senate Trump would veto it. Waste of time.

Not at all. It's just another attempt to get "Trump is stupid and incompetent" into the news feeds. These guys know it isn't going anywhere as law, but it serves their interest as propaganda.

It's beginning to look a lot like 1939.

Including the brown shirts and the propaganda.

The reset button signaled to Russia, “it’s not you, it’s me” . And now they turn on Russia? It’s hard to follow the Left’s logic. I

Since when did Democrats become the party of military spending?

Vlad is an @$$#013 but like the old Soviets he’s a pragmatic one, IMO.

He stirs up trouble here and there, but as others have said on this thread, if it’s really that big a deal anymore maybe the krauts could take a little interest.

Surely Frau Merkel can replace the 9,500 troops from the ranks of the million military-aged Muslim men she invited to march into Europe.

They hate the military. Why the hell do they care if more troops are there? Pigs. They could give a care less about us.

Do we really need 35,000 troops there? Is 35,000 enough to stop an invasion, but 25,000 are not sufficient?
