Facebook to let users turn off political adverts
BBC News ^ | June 17, 2020

Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg says users will be able to turn off political adverts on the social network in the run-up to the 2020 US election.

In a piece written for USA Today newspaper, he also says he hopes to help four million Americans sign up as new voters.

Facebook has faced heavy criticism for allowing adverts from politicians that contain false information.

Rival social platform Twitter banned political advertising last October. “For those of you who’ve already made up your minds and just want the election to be over, we hear you -- so we’re also introducing the ability to turn off seeing political ads,” Mr Zuckerberg wrote.

Facebook and its subsidiary Instagram will give users the option to turn off political adverts when they appear or they can block them using the settings features.

Users that have blocked political adverts will also be able to report them if they continue to appear.

The feature, which will start rolling out on Wednesday, allows users to turn off political, electoral and social issue adverts from candidates and other organisations that have the "Paid for" political disclaimer.

I have overheard two people say how sick they are of the political adverts on social media. (One is a flaming liberal.) I was getting nauseated by Bernie asking me for a favor on YouTube. I mean my reaction was getting so bad I could feel it in my gut.

Since they track these things on social media, they should put in a button so you could switch it from politics to Depends or Preparation H. That would give them a clue as to how annoyed they were making their users.

This hurts Trump. If not they wouldn’t be doing it.

Yep, it’s to stop Trump. I’ve only received ads from Biden, never Trump. And all of my contacts are conservative.

How about turning off all political postings by friends/family? Any posting is automatically blocked.

I like to click on them to ensure that a small fee is charged to Bernie or whoever. Downside is that it gives revenue to facebook.

I wonder if they consider BLM and other Left Wing hate groups to be political?

When I use the freebie app on my computer “Fluff Busting Purity” I don’t see ANYTHING I don’t want to see on Facebook, period. Wish they made it for cell phones, but hey, it works on the computer, at least!

Why am I still on Facebook, you ask?

1.) Friends & Family - although I haven’t read the so-called “news feed” in weeks.

2.) Business - Can’t seem to get beyond the ease & allure of Facebook; people are programmed to use it. We need constant updates & communication but they won’t budge. UGH. We’re ready, though, once that plug gets pulled.

Very true. I just went to the ads settings to check and it wasn’t there. It asked for suggestions on which ads/posts to end. I entered BLM, Antifa

Just got a new Win 10, just learning it, not all things transferred over. Weird from 7 Pro.

It’s definitely different. I had one with a touch screen. I liked that.

I’ve been without any computer for a year or 2. Money is tight. So, it’s a tablet and/or phone for now.
