The NYPD announced Monday it is eliminating its anti-crime unit, a group of plainclothes officers who blend in to fight crime but have caused tension in relations with the communities.
Police Commissioner Dermot Shea described the move as a massive cultural shift for the department, saying the 600 officers who are part of the unit will be transitioned to other departments, including the detective bureau and neighborhood policing."
This is a seismic shift in the culture of how the NYPD polices this great city," he said. "I would consider this in the realm of closing one of the last chapters of 'Stop, Question and Frisk'...I think it's time to more forward and change how we police in this city. We can do it with brains. We can do it with guile. We can move away from brute force."
Anti-crime officers are often closest to criminals, and Shea said the move is "not without risk" as he questioned whether the decision would result in fewer firearms being taken off the streets.
He said the risk is "squarely on my shoulders."
Meanwhile, another New York City police officer has been disciplined for actions taken against demonstrators during protests over the death of George Floyd.
Shea said the officer was suspended without pay for discharging mace at a group of bystanders during the protests and unrest of June 1.
The incident was captured on video that shows the female probationary officer running past the group in front of 41 East 57th Street near Trump Tower in Midtown.

It is now a firing offense for a police officer to use mace against rioters?
REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER, VOTE OUT EVER DEMOCRAT ON THE BALLOT.
#STUNNING! Plain clothes anti-crime cops have historically been responsible for the majority of gun and violent crime arrests in New York City. To avoid police/suspect confrontations, the department has disbanded the precinct and the crime teams. Dangerous times to come. https://t.co/tgNta7lpo3— Bernard B. Kerik (@BernardKerik) June 15, 2020
No words for this.
Far and away the most effective units in the NYPD.

You know who will benefit from these attacks against the police?
La Raza.
Sounds like time for Rudy to come out of retirement, get back to NYC and clean this crap up yet again!
New Yorkers will vote in the same politicians again and again. I feel really sorry for republicans and conservatives in that state, they are totally outnumbered by snowflakes with a death wish.
If I were a cop in NYC I would be sending out my resume to every red state I could find.
my dad was NYPD for 23 years. He worked in this unit during the mid to late 70’s but it was called SEU- Street Enforcement Unit.
Personally i hope karma hits every and anyone who was against this unit.
First, she was not fired, she was suspended without pay.
Second, if you watch the video, there is no indication the people she maced were doing anything other than standing there. My guess is they yelled something she didn’t like, so she sprayed them.
Wonder if he knew the guys that the movie Supercops was based on?
Wait a second...
I thought the police were SUPPOSED to confront suspects.
Your guess includes the possibility of a credible threat.
Anti-Crime has taken all kinds of things off city streets. From bad guys to guns. Why is that a bad thing? Racial tensions because of plainclothes units is a joke. The new Commissioner should be ashamed of bowing down. To make this poor decision.
