Challenger Bob Good ousts Rep. Denver Riggleman at 5th District GOP nominating convention (Virginia)

Challenger Bob Good has ousted Rep. Denver Riggleman, R-5th in a rancorous drive-thru convention for the party's nomination.

Voting in the all-day convention at a church in Campbell County concluded at 7 p.m., but party officials did not announce the results until after 1 a.m.

Fifth District GOP chairman Melvin Adams said 2,537 delegates voted Saturday. Good said he received 58% of the tally.

On Twitter Riggleman asserted that "voting irregularities and ballot stuffing has been reported in multiple counties" in the district. He added: "We are evaluating all our options at this time."

As for Riggleman's allegations, Good said: "That's what losers say."

In seeking a second term, Riggleman, who runs Silverback Distillery with his wife, faced tough competition from Good, a former Campbell County supervisor and Liberty University employee.

Riggleman faced a backlash among some conservative activists in the sprawling district after he officiated in 2019 at a gay wedding for two men who had volunteered for his campaign. Riggleman, who touts a libertarian streak, says Republicans need to expand their base and have a “big tent” philosophy.

The controversy has made the 5th District convention something of a test case for the Virginia GOP, which has not won a statewide race since 2009 and which has lost ground to Democrats in the state’s congressional delegation and the legislature during President Donald Trump’s term. Riggleman is one of four Republicans left in Virginia’s U.S. House delegation. All four serve largely rural districts.

Neither Riggleman nor Good strike me as ‘strong’ choices.

Ric Grennel is a hero. I don’t care what he does in his spare time.

Yea, to see the 50 year old argument about what two people do behind closed doors is nauseating. If it were just that, the Left (both in Europe and the US) would be BUDDIES with Putin, since he agrees. But what sets the Left off is that Putin tells them to keep it there and, in particular, to leave Russian children alone.

In this country, the writing was on the wall, but it was even too much for this conservative to believe when a spokesman for NAMBLA was talking man/boy relations in the 1980s, on talk radio. I was convinced it was a stunt. Obviously it was not. And now people on the left are looking to decriminalize these types of attacks. Go figure.

>> I know you hate me for saying this, but we need to get pass the gay issue as it will not be a winner with my generation. <<

Interesting. I didn't know Meghan McCain had an account on FR! Hi, Meghan!

>> My generation wants to lower taxes, more gun rights, but who the F cares if John Smith and John Doesn’t are in love? <<

Actually, if you polled most "millennials", you'd probably find that "your generation" wants HIGHER taxes and LESS gun rights, in addition to gay marriage. Teens tend to be liberal and people over 50 tend to be conservative, and that hasn't changed throughout history. Fortunately the under 30 crowd tends not to vote, whereas senior citizens tend to vote very heavily, so society as a whole is not inflicted with foolish socialist dreams of the youth.

As history has shown, they will probably see the error of their ways and their views will "evolve" to be MORE conservative in a few decades.

But if you want to pull the "generation gap" on me, I was born in the early 80s, which puts me on the cusp right between Gen Xer and Millennial. I have vehemently opposed the insane concept that two men can be "married" my whole life, and my views will never change on that matter. So all the people blabbing about how "my generation" feels about this crap DO NOT SPEAK FOR ME.

God spoke on this issue. Once this country decides to embrace all manner and sort of immorality and degeneracy, as we are seeing at present, the country will soon collapse. We were designed as a nation for Godly people.

Unmentioned in most outlets but Good also campaigned on ending birthright citizenship. That doesn’t sound like something Riggleman would be into.

RINO Riggleman considering a third party bid for Governor to help the democrats. Republican voters made the right choice chucking this punk.

No surprise. Riggleman’s an idiot, and not very conservative.
