As Jazz Shaw pointed out last weekend, Mayor de Blasio has been desperately trying to keep up with the demands made by activists. The short version is that after signaling some initial opposition to defunding the NYPD, de Blasio reversed course and announced plans to shift funds to other priorities. But de Blasios flat-footed response to the demands has apparently worn out some of his black supporters. Today the NY Times reports many are choosing to abandon him. The change in tone was evident at George Floyd memorial in Brooklyn last week:
Mayor Bill de Blasio looked out into a sea of protesters at a memorial with George Floyds brother in Brooklyn last week and delivered a bold promise: He would transform the New York Police Department. Change that you can see and believe, because you will see it with your own eyes, he declared.
The response from many of the black protesters was withering.
Obscenities and chants of resign and I cant breathe filled the air, drowning out Mr. de Blasio. Some demonstrators turned their backs on him as he spoke. After 90 seconds, he turned the microphone over
[Rev. Kevin] McCall futilely pleaded with the crowd to show the mayor some respect. The problem, he said, was that the mayor had lost his credibility with New Yorkers, especially in the black community.
The AP has posted video of this and it really is brutal. You almost feel sorry for the guy. Almost:
But according to the Times it goes beyond that one tough crowd:
You can no longer hide behind your black wife and children, not anymore, Jumaane Williams, the citys public advocate, said last week during an online news conference. Youre exposed now.
Mr. Williams, who is black, added, We are at a time when we are asking you to do the things you said you were going to do.
Mr. de Blasio has spent the last few days consulting with black leaders to try to salvage a relationship that has buttressed his political career. Last Sunday, he met at Gracie Mansion with Gwen Carr, the mother of Eric Garner; Mr. McCall; and Iesha Sekou, the founder of the Harlem anti-violence group Street Corner Resources, among others.
The mayor is now said to be re-calibrating his message. The about face on defunding the NYPD was part of that.
I would say that de Blasio is in deep trouble but lets face it, Ralph Northam is still Governor of Virginia. If he can turn around a blackface scandal, Mayor de Blasio can probably recover from this. Then again, part of this may be about the national mood. Would Northam still be in office if the blackface photo surface this week? I dont think so.
Addendum: Heres a CBS New York report on de Blasios vague plan to cut funding to the NYPD. Thats going to be a real challenge in the midst of a spike in crime compared to last year. The only thing you can be sure of is that whatever cuts de Blasio announces, they wont be nearly enough for the activists.
I’m not sure of the reason WHY they are abandoning their support of De Blasio...
The article does not make it clear.
The really bad part for Big bird and NYC is when they realize how many will vote with their feet.
De Blasio has only one real problem........ he’s not black.
Mayors of big cities must be black. It’s called Africanization
Indeed, I write it off as more NY Times propoganda.
One gets the sense that radical blacks are abandoning Wilhelm because hes not radical enough?
If they would take one more step and call out the entire democrat party for what happens in the cities they run, maybe they could make some real progress in fixing some of these problems.
This is the Old Gray Whore on the Hudson.
They’ve lied before.
They’re lying now.
When the people with money leave, you’re Screwed
“Mayor de Blasio has been desperately trying to keep up with the demands made by activists.”
Billy de Blah Blah trying to keep up with DEMANDS MADE BY THE MOB. LOL!
Have they moved the trucks filled with dead bodies yet?
Black Wives Dont Matter.
I looks to me like that - although de Blasio is pandering - hes not pandering enough. So if he wants to win back that radical crowd, ol Bill will have to promise much more, and be quick about it.
And Ill bet thats exactly what he will do.
Interesting comment, but the people in question don’t marry. They spawn bastards
Perhaps Ball-less Billy D could wear an athletic supporter on his head to show his solidarity. Eh, limpy?
You know the left is in control when everything is absurd 100% of the time.
Mayor Bill de Blasios own staff have excoriated him in public letters and with an unprecedented march across the Brooklyn Bridge over his handling of citywide protests but that didnt stop Hizzoner from declaring Friday that hes the nations greatest mayor. This is the strongest mayoralty in the country, in every sense, and the strongest city in the country, in every sense, and we can persevere through all sorts of challenges and we will. So Im quite confident in what we can do in the next year and a half, the term-limited mayor boasted at his daily City Hall press briefing. And he said anyone who doubts that doesnt have a firm grasp on reality. (Excerpt) Read more at nypost.com ...
=============================
OOPSIE----the Mayor's words were slightly edited. This is what he actually said.....(snx).
Mine is the strongest mayoralty in the country, in every sense, including stealing from the taxpayers of NYC. My administration is the biggest looter in the country, creating money laundry opportunities from every tax dollar that pours in. We can persevere through all sorts of financial challenges and we will. So Im quite confident in what we can make even more opportunities for ourselves in the next year and a half."
The term-limited mayor boasted at his daily City Hall press briefing. And added: anyone who doubts that hasnt kept up with my wife's activities. I put her in charge of four govt-funded agencies that have the mot potential for money-making WITH NO OVERSIGHT. The money'c coming in so fast, she can't even go shopping. She's stuck wearing that shirt with watermelon slices bought back when black lives DID NOT matter....cackle.
My wife is in charge of:
(A) <><> mental health reform (she "forgot" where she put $800 million tax dollars)
(B) <><> coronavirus racial equity.....(making sure Blacks get it, too?)
(C) <><> the sap-happy Mayors Task Force on Racial Inclusion
(D) <><> I gave her "The Mayor's Fund for NYC" which receives non-stop tax dollars to "do-good" for our city (and to finance our political ambitions).
RE: I looks to me like that - although de Blasio is pandering - hes not pandering enough.
In other words, he’s NOT RADICAL ENOUGH. He does not want to totally disband the NYPD and that’s unacceptable to these blacks who are abandoning him.
Well, what a disappointment, I was hoping the black folks in NYC would abandon him because he was weak on law and order.
Uhh, he can’t run again.
Not a chance.
