The New Jersey city of Camden is in the process of removing its Christopher Columbus statue as the time was right to do it with everything that is happening nationally.
Vincent Basara, its spokesman, spoke to Fox News Friday after the city announced it will establish a plan to reexamine these outdated symbols of racial division and injustices.
"The statue has been controversial for years and the time was right to do it with everything that is happening nationally, Basara told Fox News, referring to the ongoing demonstrations following the death of George Floyd.

Why not burn some books, too?
Maybe theyll put up a statue of a Muslim slaver instead?
Should change his last name and go to hell.
The time to take down the statue in Columbus Circle is when I’m dead in front of it.
Because that’s what will have to be for them to move it.
I wish I could say “well at least the southern statues are holding up” but nowhere is any of this being fought.
We fought to keep the Columbus Statue and de blasio backed off but we all know it is coming again.
I’d rather die there than live in the country I see developing.
New Jersey was already the armpit of New York, now they want to be the rectum of America.
B-but we won 2016!
I agree on Camden, the Columbus statue was probably one of the two nice things left in the city - the other being the battleship New Jersey. But wide swaths of South Jersey, the shore towns and Northwest Jersey are as beautiful places as you’ll find.
That’ll automatically transform Camden from a no-go hellhole to some sort of land of enlightenment.
Time to change the name of Columbia University.
I am thinking of starting a GoFundMe to collect money to build a Columbus Statue on Staten Island where there are several hundred thousand Italian Americans out of 500,000 people.
There needs to be one here.
If they can paint black lives matter on a street on the black side of the island, we can put up a statue of Columbus.
they can try and stop it.
Not good enough. In order to atone for the crimes of Christopher Columbus, you white people in charge in Camden need to give up your jobs and your homes to more deserving black people and other minorities.
This is meaningless symbology. It doesn't count unless it HURTS you people who have "white privilege."
"Make the enemy live up to his own book of rules."
I know camden very well. I lived the next town over for decades. My wife and I took many trips to Jamaica over the years and know full well that Jamaica is a rough place out side the resorts. I would be magnitudes safer stumbling around in the middle of the night, drunk outside the resort in Jamaica than walking in broad daylight in camden being a white man. Just say’in...
South Jersey and North Jersey are two completely different places. You can make the case that North Jersey is the armpit of NYC but not South Jersey (except for Camden which was a great place until white flight starting in the late '60s which killed it in less than a decade). Sadly North Jersey has the numbers and dominates NJ state politics.
I'm okay with North Jersey being declared the rectum of the USA.
why not disband America then?
we must reverse the impact of Columbus to cleanse our racist culture and country. Everyone down to the docks, we’re going home.
Maybe they will be changing the names of all those cities and town named Columbus and Columbia.
I lived in DE in the 1970’s and spent a lot of time in South Jersey.
Cape May is beautiful.
Fished the swamps near the Delaware River.
I have even found spots in the north of NJ that are nice, up near Delaware Water Gap and High Point.
Politically it is lost like most of the northeast and has now fatally infected my state.
How long til they come for the Knights of Columbus?
Camden went down years before the 60s.
Cramer Hill was even declining at that time.
