Trump slams GOP-led panel backing removal of Confederate names from military bases

WASHINGTON — The GOP-led Armed Services Committee has approved a motion requiring the Pentagon to rename military bases and assets named after Confederate leaders — defying President Trump, who warned them not to support the Elizabeth Warren-introduced measure.

The committee on Wednesday approved the amendment to the annual defense bill which will establish a commission to rename all Pentagon assets — including ships, planes, buildings, military bases and equipment — that bear the name of Confederate generals within the next three years, Roll Call reported.

Cities across America have begun removing statues honoring Confederate leaders as the nation engages in an emotional conversation about race and civil rights in the wake of George Floyd’s death at the hands of a white police officer.

Aboard Air Force One on his way to Dallas Thursday afternoon, President Trump tweeted his disapproval of the move from Warren, a member of the committee and former Democratic presidential candidate, telling Republicans not to “fall for” it.

“Seriously failed presidential candidate, Senator Elizabeth “Pocahontas” Warren, just introduced an Amendment on the renaming of many of our legendary Military Bases from which we trained to WIN two World Wars. Hopefully our great Republican Senators won’t fall for this!” Trump wrote.

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, repeating the president’s tweets on the subject Wednesday, said Trump would in no way support the renaming of military bases — setting up a showdown between the president and Capitol Hill and potentially endangering the defense budget.

“The president will not be signing legislation that renames America’s forts,” McEnany told reporters.

America is GREAT both because of and in spite of her history.

Sometimes the only option seems to be slamming one’s head against the wall.

Why did all of these idiots just show up? Are they scared?

Trump should say he will veto the measure unless these assets are named after MOH recipients. Period. Their stories are forgotten. This would help bring them to light. TOTAL WINNER for Trump. Disrespecting the Medal Of Honor is a stone cold loser for a politician. This allows him to take the initiative.

There can be no acceptable future without an honest analysis of the past. - Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

In keeping silent about evil, in burying it so deep within us that no sign of it appears on the surface, we are implanting it, and it will rise up a thousandfold in the future. When we neither punish nor reproach evildoers . . . we are ripping the foundations of justice from beneath new generations. - Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

What “sntitfa” hates is the peaceful reconciliation after the Civil War.

Peaceful reconciliation is a deathly condemnation of their goals. They cannot allow even the idea.

The Turtle had nothing to do with this vote. It was a Voice Vote within the committee. A cowardly move where they can say the measure passed but, no record of who voted for or against. All we know is that some R’s voted for it in order for it to pass the committee.

[“The president will not be signing legislation that renames America’s forts,” McEnany told reporters.]

That’s not the same as saying he will veto it, which is what I’d prefer he had said.
